A-833 first Gear Problem

Ok, whenever I am driving, going into first gear sometimes grinds a little or you have to feel the gears in, or it'll just go perfectly into gear.
Now, I understand that this isnt an easy transmittion by any means, but is it a worn syncrode or something causing this?

Well, as with any manual transmission, there can be a few things wrong...

My Jetta i have to sometimes throw in 2nd, then in 1st real quick to get it to go in. Sometimes it'll grind, and sometimes it'll go right in.

Have you tried putting it into 1st, then into Reverse? If you hear a grinding going into reverse, i believe it means the clutch is out of balance, meaning you may as well buy a new clutch/pressure plate, ect.

Also can by synchros... running it low on trans/gear fluid...

the fluid is a 80-90 weight
the owners manual says to use 140 in hot climate, 80-90 in medium climate, and ATF in very cold climates

from what i've read and what the expert mopar guy in town here reccommends either atf or straight 30. the thicker oil creates those problems - i had some of the same issues with 90 weight in mine, causes grinding and required me to double-clutch to up and down shift

i just wonder why it only happens some times

and also, when the car first started working, 2000 was the lowest idle it could be set to
even with this fast idle, the trans was ok
then, sometimes, when the choke comes on, and the rpms go up, (this is now with a correct idle), the trans doesnt want to go into gear?
go figure......

the gears never grind when the car is cold
maybe the 140 weight oil would work?

Yes, try draining some of the 80=90 and put in some 140 and see what happens. If that dont work, the syncro's might be bad. Original style 833 syncro's require 'heavy' lube. You can update the to newer style syncro's that you can use with the thinner lube.

The only other thing that I can think of that might be causing your problem would be a throwout bearing hanging up (not disengaging all the way), but that doesn't jibe with the "hot only" part of the equation.

thicker oil will make it worse - the key to the 833's is thinner oil.
thicker slows down the synchros making shifting worse through all gears. i had the same issues in mine with the thicker gear oil

but if there is alot of wear, the thicker oil will help with the grinding.[slows the syncro's] Its a stop-gap fix
I agree that it will shift slower in general.
Try it to see if it makes a difference. You can always drain it back out if it dont work. The thick oil help the neutral to first engagement. Especially in the older 833 from the sixties. Newer ones had a different design syncro.
Thin oil is NOT going to make your '67 833 shift better. [if it is all original]

still have the grind
it only seems to happen when the car is moving just a little bit
if i try it around 4-5 mph, it really grinds
usually going from neutral to first
