8n3/4 rear end question

I understand there are 2 differnet case numbers for the 8 3/4 rear. 489 and 7?? Can anyone tell me if one is better than the other? Also are the axles different for each case or are they interchangable. I have a 1971 Barracuda and I think it has something like 273 gears and its non posi. I imagine just about anything else would be better.

There's actually three, 741, 742, and the 489. If you go to a thread called
old gearhead, but new to MOPARs. I explain some of it there. It's in the new member section.
