A904 or 727 ... And why ???
DonNene74
My question is ... I have a 318 engine with a few lil things, like pulleys, MSD ignition, blah bla blah blah... But I want to change from Manual to Automatic " Yes I'm getting Older". What is my best choice on Trannys ... A 904 or a 727 ? ... All i know is that 727 is bigger, but it will fit a small block like mine? ... Any one help???

WHAT YEAR!!! car do you have, and is this a "poly" 318 or an LA/ Magnum?
904's can handle a lot of power, there are racers using them on 600hp and maybe more. IF you race it, in some ways a 904 is safer than a 727 because it doesnt seem as susceptable to drum explosions. You MUST have a "smallblock" trans--- a B / RB or slant six won't fit. Also, TFs were cast in special housings for a number of other manufacturers, including AMC and IHC. These won't work, either.
A 904 is likely to match your present stick for length and the driveshaft will likely fit as is. A 727 is longer, has different output splines, and will require a shorter driveshaft
I use a 727 because that's what I "found used." You can put a manual valve body in it and have just about as much fun as a stick
Pay attention buying used............360s are external balanced by design and Mopar handled that by putting weights on the face of the converter on them. If you find a 360 trans / converter you can knock the weights off.
You probably won't want what is known as a "lock up" transmission, which is easily recognized by looking at the front shaft. A "regular" TF will have splines going all the way to the front of the shaft. A "lockup" trans will have a smooth area ahead of the splines sort of like a stick pilot shaft
If you have a later car, make sure you don't get an earlier trans with cable shift and or the bolt-on flange drive out the back. Some trucks and motorhomes used these, stay away. Speaking of them, some used VERY short shaft trans which you don't want
The 904/ 727 is easy to tell at a glance--just look at the passenger side pan rail. A 904 is straight, a 727 has a bulge near the front of the pan side rail.
