Balancing a 440
I have a 1978 Plymouth Trailduster that I am rebuilding the engine. I am getting it balanced. My question is does the 440 balance internally or externally. I have a 727 behind it I do know that it makes a difference. I have access to Prosis which is put out by the Engine Rebuilders Association of America. My machine shop uses the same thing and it says the 440 could be balanced either way. Any help would be great.

It also depends on the crank, if its got the stock crank (cast) it was externally balanced, the forged ones were stock internally balanced. You will find that there are weights on the converter, not sure if its as easy as taking them off, but when I did it I got a new converter.

yeah its pretty much that easy. done it many times without regret. and sorry about my jumping saying that you have a cast crank. i was thinking 318 for some reason 72 and later they all were cast cranks. but some 440 were still forged, just look at the converter that will tell you if its forged or cast,

thanks for the info. I have a cast crank but I dug around and found a forged crank that the machine shop had turned for a guy 10 yrs ago and never came back for it. It has been turned .010 .010 and is straight has a good ring to it and has the J fillet radius. I have order a new balancer and ordered a new convertor becuase I need a bit more stall for the cam i am putting in it. but thanks again

I've had a crank turned for my 383 when I had it and i've got a turned crank in my AMC 360. I never had an issue with them only turned .010. I wouldn't use it if it was more than .020 though, especialling in a motor making some power.
