Idle setting for a 69 roadrunner?

Can anyone tell me what the factory idle rpm setting should be for a 1969 roadrunner with a 383 motor I need to verify my idle setting before I can check the timing.

I imagine there may be a slight difference in factory idling between a manual and an auto. For an auto I run 800 rpm at idle. BUT, I'm not stock.

i'd try somewhere in between 600 and 700; for some reason, 660 comes to mind.

most important is so it is not so high that it bangs in to gear, on an automatic trans.

383 -

Depends on a lot of stuff (like overall condition of the motor), but if basically stock, 700 - 800 in neutral and 600 - 700 in gear (auto). Drop from neutral to drive should be in the 100 - 150 rpm range.

I had a chance to go out and fire up the RR to verify what the car was idling at. It idled about 1200 - 1300 rpm in neutral. This seems a little high compared to all the comments I received. To the best of my knowledge, the engine is a stock 383 with a Holley 4160 750CFM carb and a 4 speed manual.

Should I mess with the idle and drop it down around 700 rpm????

Yes, in my opinion you should drop the idle down to 700-800. 1200-1300 is too high. Lowering the idle should take you no time at all.

Good luck.

If you lower the idle and the engine cuts off, there's a timing or carburetor problem that needs to be addressed.
