For those with Slant 6 motors and autos.....

So I've got a 68 Plymouth Valiant, 2dr, hard top, slant 6, 904 tranny, power steering, power brakes, nothing else (no radio even). I've had it up for sale with little to no luck selling it. I own this car outright and it only needs some parts to get it to pass inspection (shocks, some brake bleeding, exhaust work, other smaller items).

My question is, what kind of gas milage can I expect from it? What are you getting for gas mileage? I'm spending ~$430 a month on gas with my truck every month (~$110 a week) and it's killing me. I'm thinking ~18-22GPM on gas depending on timing and carb adjustments. The rear axle is a 7.25, I do not recall what the gear ratio is but have no issue with swapping gears myself.

Now before anyone goes flamming me (yes you can flame me even with my position - I like good argument), I am planning on using this car as a DD during the spring, summer, fall month when there is little to no snow on the ground.

I think you meant to say rear axle of 2.75. My guess would be 20-24 mpg if in good tune and driven properly.

I read somewhere that my dart (4 door) only got 14-16 mpg when it was new. I think that's about right. Also it doesn't run good if I put regular in it.

15 is about the average for a slanty, you would really have to push for anything more. I would leave it as is and drive it, it could end up costing a lot more to save a little more in the long run if you start experimenting.

I'm getting ~11-12 MPG in my truck.

I was thinking that 14-16 probably would have been more realistic for the slant 6. The cool factor will help offset that though.

Saved money is helpful. I still need to do some work to it though once all this snow is gone.

My step son just rebuilt a /6 727 for school and I was thinking of maybe going super high compression and a 4 bbl running E-85 in a 225 incher. I know they say E-85 is crap but it is being used in dual fuel cars. I figure a purpose built mill would get more power from less fuel. Gas prices are going to make us all look for a better solution. I will need a striped down a body for it to work, but it is just a thought these days. I would think you could pull high teens with a light, well thought out set up. Heck new cars can't do any better than cars from the forties. look em up some time. You will be surprised how little progress we have made in sixty years. They do go faster though. A lot of computer crap but no real improvements in operation.

No, he did mean a 7.25 ( 7 1/4 rear axle)

And i'd think atleast 18 in a slant..
