Welding Open Chambers, 440 Heads

Hi all,

In an article I've read dating back to 2010 by Mopar Muscle Mag :http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/t...ads/index.html,
there is reference made to the possibility of filling an open chamber production head on BB's by welding or spraying metal in that area and then having it machined. Has anyone out there tried this with success?

I am a Welder of 13 years and now specialize in alloy pressure pipe welding exotic materials such as Inconels, Monels, Titanium, Chrome, Aluminum, Stainless, as well as cast iron and carbon steels. I have access to the facilities and proper welding rods to do this type of application as well as the proper ovens for controlling pre/post weld treatments.

Do you think that this would be a viable task and also would I need to do this to get the 350-400hp out of my factory 78' 440 (stamp 4006630-440) using stock crank, new pistons, new cam and intake, and a 650-700 cfm carb? I want a streetable ride and will probably look for something like a Coronet or Fury to put it. My budget is limited though, only looking to spend $3-4K so I'll try and salvage what I can. Also I plan to get a port template kit from MP and do some of that work as well. Any advice or tips are welcome.

Thanks,

Joe Welder

Sounds like a lot of work for very little gain... If your rebuilding it ? Just get the correct pistons

Thanks for your input, I'll post updates on how it works out.

Cheers

Shoot, for the amount of work you'd have to do to the heads and the benefit you'd gain, I'd say just hit 440 source and grab a set of their heads. Aluminum, based on the 906 casting with some improvements, and you can get a set complete, ready to bolt on for right at $900. Put those on there, bump your compression to about 10.5 or 11 (the aluminum heads will let you run higher compression without detonation because of how well they dissipate the heat), then a good carb & intake and something like a Lunati Voodoo, and you should have something getting even more than what you want, in a reliable engine, and well below what you'd said you budgeted. Plan on a stall converter if you're going automatic, and think about your gears as you build to keep everything going in one planned direction and build your power to how you want to drive.

If you are into repairing heads I have a set that I ran lean and heat cracked years ago that could use a repair all ported and polished years before there were aluminum heads
