i have an 85 fifth avenue with the 318 in it. the other day i was driving at night and the light on the ammeter turned on and it had a slight drain to it. i turned off the high beams and it went off. the next day i was driving and the light was on so i turned off the highbeams and then the radio and then it went off. today i went to the junkyard to get an alternator and when i put it on my battery was completely dead. i had some one jump me and it wont charge any more than enough to run the ignition. when its running and i open the door the lights draw more power and the car shuts off. i replaced the voltage regulator and it didnt help. the battery was new from feb. and the alternator i got in march. any suggestions?

 

Check the output of the Alt with a multimeter and load test the batt.
