1970 Challenger gas smell inside the car
Hi everyone
I got my dream car today, a 1970 Dodge Challenger that was originally a 318 but is now a 440 6 pack with a 4 speed and a shaker hood.... Holy crap this thing moves 😊.
But after a 7 hour drive to get it home I'm trying to come down from the high.... but the wrong kind, all the way home I had stinging eyes and I stink of fuel. Is there any way to prevent this or is it just a standard part of owning such a beast?
Thanks in advance
Brad

Thanks for the replies and sorry for sounding like a complete noob, but I think it might be set too rich as after I give it a boot full I can smell it even stronger.

Assuming the carbs aren't malfunctioning, if it's running rich, start with the A/F adjustment screws, if that's not enough, then play with the jets.
Now, I know folks will disagree, but IMHO a 6 Pack (without a heck of a cam) may look cool, but for street you'd be better off with an appropriately sized 4 barrel on a dual plane manifold.

I like playing as much as the next guy, just after a while, giving up performance or drive-ability stops being fun.
We're not talking about a numbers matching car here.
Selling off the six-pack should give him enough money to get a more solid 4V set up with enough
left over to play with other stuff. Maybe a lot of other stuff.
Around my neck of the woods, except for the full show car guys (with numbers matching cars) most of the 6-pack guys have switched to single to a single 4V.
Heck, my 440 was originally a 6-pack and that came off in the 80's when I started racing.
Either way, he can try to fix the rich burning problem by playing with the carbs or replacing it.
Gotta give him the options.

You really have to figure out if it's a rich carb or a fuel leak.
Pull a plug or two and see what color they are.
Plenty of spark plug color charts on the web.
