1987 318 with electronic spark control
I am in need of some help please. I have a mint 87 5th ave. for my daughter who starts driving in in two days. It has been sitting for a couple months waiting for her well i took it to fill it up and it started running terrible. it seems when engine is cold it runs great but after about ten minutes i can not give it anything more than 1/4 throttle. when i do it bogs out and backfires out the exhaust
until i let off gas. sitting still i can get the engine to rev if i apply gas slowly, but if given more than the 1/4 throttle bogs and backfires. i would like to repair it if possible if i knew what to look for!! I did a dist. swap on my old 79 magnum 25 years ago but really don't remember all involved with this.
If i cant get it running properly in its current configuration what are my other options?? switching out to ingnition box and older dist.?? How about one of the dui models with one wire hook up to eliminate ballist resistor?? will i have to swapp the carb out also?? and if so what would be best to use?? thanks for taking your time to read my book!!!!!

Throttle Body Injection with box on the air cleaner can be troublesome.

scrap that system. get the good old chrysler ignition system. easy to put on. very stable. easy to trouble shoot. here is are things to think about. Mopar dist cap wiring... vent
My dad made this saying about chrysler V8 small and big block dist cap wireing. To reduce wiring confuseion. “the small block has the dist in the wrong place, in the back of the engine. BUT the shaft rotates the right way clockwise. The big block has the dist in the right place, in the front of the engine BUT the shaft rotates the wrong direction counterclockwise. Both wire #5 and #7 on both ALL ways have #5 before #7 on the cap AND block. And most / some stock V8s have the fireing order cast in to the intake manifold. AND: DO plug the vent with JB-weld. Keeps the moursture out.

By this it shows not, I believe they were centrifugal lock-up, but easily searched.

I have a manual for the 5th ave, diplomat and other rear drive vehicles from 1987 and it says it is controlled by the lean burn system computer or electronic spark control as its called in the later year. Coronet500 I believe you are giving info for the front drive cars as there was never a 2.2 in a rear drive car turbo or not. This is a caburated car that the spark and from what I am getting the trans lock up is controlled by the air cleaner computer. The earlier model torque converters where not electric lock up but seems to have changed in the middle eighties. Thanks.

Well my crystal ball is telling me that it is not a computer or ignition problem but it is a fuel problem. The fuel filter is plugged, Change the filter and see if it helps the problem.. A backfire is usually caused by a lean fuel condition...Bill

New filter and pump. Like I said runs perfect til it warms up say 10 minutes then just sounds like getting flooded out starts backfiring through exhaust til let off gas. I appreciate the help but believe its the spark control or a sensor not telling it to advance spark . possibly accelerater pump or carb

i would be happy to remove the lean burn set up if someone can confirm it will not effect my torque convertor locking up. i did so on myold 79 magnum 20 years ago was simple but then again it did not have a elctronic lock up. i will see about checking the sensor when it warms up a bit here -20 with wind chill today thanks for all the responces
