383 B Block Build Up Hp. Read This Please :)

Hello, I'm from Canada, Quebec. My english isn't perfect so sorry if you don't understand everything 100% clear.

Me and my friend, owner of a 1973 Charger will swap a 383 that we've build this winter.
This is the engine, BASED on the build of this article
http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/t...ore/index.html

Block : 1969 B Block, bored 0.030, decked to have piston 0.010 in the hole
Crank : Stock forged 1969 crank polished
Rod : Stock 1969 forged rod, arp bolt, resized
Piston : Keith Black Domed Hypereuthetic KB400
Head : Fully ported 906, 2.18/1.81 valves. Crane Gold 1.6 Roller Rockers, shave to 75CC chambers.
Flow 294 CFM @ 600 lift, 284 CFM @ 500 lift

So compression is like 10.8:1 or 11.2:1
Don't worry about gas

Intake : Port matched Mopar M1 Single Plane
Carb : Holley 850 Double Pumper
Camshaft : Mopar Performance Mp528 camshaft :
Duration 284°/284°, 241°/241° @0.050, .528/.528 lift
Headers : Hookers Super comp 1 7/8" 3" collector

I'm hoping to have 500,525 HP. Realistic ?
Please post your comment on this build up.

Thanks
Maverick !

Maybe close. You're almost identical to my build, but I've got you by about 60 cubic inches (440, .030" over) and your cam is a bit heavier than mine. I'm running a 74 Charger, which should be the same weight as yours (same car really).

Not sure how the numbers balance out, but you might be pretty close.

What you didn't mention was the intended use for the car, and what type of transmission and rear end (gears) you have.

With those cam specs, it should sound great and have plenty of power, but might not be the most comfortable thing to drive on the street.

I've a TF727 that i've build with the B&M Trankit will all "TRACK" options for harsh shifting. 3800 RPM Stall

The rear end is a 8.75 with 4:10.

The car is going to be drive as a sunday driver and going to the racetrack on friday night and have fun. My friend want a radical street engine.

For a 4200 car (that's what mine weighs), you need a lot of torque to get it moving off the line.

You might have a pretty good race runner there (don't forget about things like sub-frame connectors if you plan on using slicks or street radials).

Sunday drives should be impressive, but may not be so much fun after a while.

Not too familiar with that cam, do you know where it's power band starts? With a 3800 stall converter, you really need it to kick in around that rpm.

The powerband is quoted 2,400-6,600 RPM and the intake powerband is 2600-7200 RPM.
Exhaust will be 3" flowmaster 40 series but disconnected on track.

The car will be lightened a bit : Front fiberglass fenders, aluminium radiator, aluminium water pump, bucket seats, aluminium intake.
Don't worry about subframe connectors, it's already planned We're going to use 28 X 10.5 X 15 MT slicks on track

We want this car FAST street drivebility is the less important thing. My friend want to have Power, Sound, Fun and Make heads turn

Awesome selections. You have a good plan too.

Couple of things I would do somewhat differently but honestly its more my taste versus yours. I would say your combo will hit 440-450 if you get a wideband meter on it and tune spark and carb for max power.

If you NEED to hit the 500HP mark here are a couple places you can pit up some ponies. But honestly, your combo is gonna be a lot of fun as is.

Camshaft: Purple shaft is decent but there have been huge improvements in cams.
Consider a cam with at least 6 more degrees more on the exhaust side and look for something with a decent lobe like the XE HL for a flat tappet or XFI lobes if you make it a roller. A roller will significantly up the HP and those heads can support that lift.

Have your head guy give you at least .620 retainer to guide clearance. It gives you wiggle room for cam swaps with new lifts and shimming if needed. I would pick a beehive spring that fits your cam needs and have the pocket machined while they are there to get you the right installed height and pocket. You may pay a little in machining but it will open the door on springs if you need to swap out cams.

Well, it’s been a freaking while since I’ve been here. FINALLT that 383 roar to life on December 23rd 2017.

We had LOTS of issues on the dyno (starter issue, massive header leaks due to head stud interference with header flange, burned spark wire ...)

The engine seemed lazy under 3000 rpm, but managed to make 501hp @ 6400 and 454 lb.ft @ 4600 (I think) ...
Really happy with result but looking to improve a bit

We might try to swap to a performer rpm intake instead of the M1, and may try advancing the cam 4 degrees to increase torque and cylinder pressure !

What you think ? ! Oh btw 501hp
was with a 950cfm carb not the 850

Yeah, been a while. I really think that carb and manifold are killing you.
Last year I swapped out the Torker and 850 for a Performer RPM and 750.
The difference in response for normal driving was pretty significant and top end specs didn't change much.
The 3800 stall may be necessary to get to the power band quickly enough on the track, but will add you your driving discomfort.
Seriously, if you "need" a 950 with those cam specs, something ain't right.

You really have to think if you're building a race car or a street car. IOWs, how often are you getting to a track?

While i agree there are better manifolds than the M1 for the low deck, even the torquer II is worth a few more hp but the car will not hurt anything on the dyno but might be flat in the lower rpms on the street. I also agree with the 3800 converter, the TA 3800 would stall around 4300 with a 4.10 gear with this combination. Make sure you have a good transmission cooler and temp gauge for street driving.

Alot has to do with the cam and heads and where you want the power to be at..... Low rpm or higher rpm.... Then adjust the rest from there...
