383 carb flame up
383 carb flame up
I have a 1971 charger with a 383. when you give it the gas (wot) the carb flames up from the intake and then dies. if you ease in to the throttle it will run up the rpm. Idle is ok. i would not want to put this on the road yet. replaced fuel pump Carter 5-6.5 psi hp street. It also has a eldlebrock #1411 carb 750 cfm, performer rpm intake,440 source new alum heads.regular road runner cam,440 source roller rockers (my mechanic freind set it up)timing 10 degrees btc. Is the fuel (about 6 months old) or fuel pressure the problem?or ignition or carb? or? Gordy THanks.

If you're getting flames through the carb, an intake value is open when that cylinder ignites, First thing to do is check the firing order, make sure you don't have any wires crossed.
Next make sure it really is at 10* BTDC.
It's possible that there's a sticking valve, but that less likely, if the guy who put the motor together knew what he was doing.
The fuel should NOT be an issue.

It also could be retarded timing, and by that I mean in your case, with 10* BTC, either the marks could be wrong, or the advance in the dist. could be stuck.
Do you know how to use a piston stop to check timing marks?
Valve adjustment? Do you know how they were set?
Also could be a bad accelerator pump in the carb. Look down carb throat with engine off, use flashlight if necessary, and move the throttle. You should INSTANTLY see the start of a squirt of fuel from the pump nozzles. Be sure the carb has fuel.
