440 with 871 blower in a 318 B body

440 with 871 blower in a 318 B body

I just bought a 1974 satellite with a 318 and found a 440 with 871 blower for sale (currently in a 1972 challenger). I am very new to cars like this. What sort of stuff will I need to make this motor work? Aside from a beefed up transmission...

Guy says it has a "mild" camshaft and comes with headers. And is asking $6500, is this a fair price for this thing?

Maybe yes maybe No When was the motor built ? By who ? How many miles ? Can you hear it run ?

Not sure on when it was built and by who. I am working on getting that information. He claims in the ad that he can show it run, fortunately it's in a small town I travel to every couple weeks for work so i will be able to take a look at it.

In lieu of getting documentation on the build hearing it and having someone more knowledgeable check out would be your safest bet.

Depending on how much HP/torque it's making, you may need more than a "beefed up" big block tranny. Suspension, frame and rear may need work as well.

I'm assuming he had what looks like a stock radiator re-cored, but the stock tanks sends up red flags from the get go.

The headers will probably not fit you engine bay - don't know for sure.

As cool as the blower looks they can be high maintenance.
Know what you are getting yourself into.

General rule: "I'm new to cars" and a "blown 440" (with a 8-71, no less), don't usually belong in the same sentence. Just my .02.

Thanks, I guess I phrased that poorly. I am new to older, mopar, muscle cars. I am ASE certified in engine repair, engine performance, light diesel, and brakes. I have rebuilt motors, but only to stock. The whole modifying is what I am not used to, especially older cars. I know about lifting trucks for 4 wheeling is the extent of modification knowledge.

I also work for mopar so have access to mechanics (I was planning on taking one from a dealer when I go look at the motor) and shops for getting the work done. But lately I have more money than I have time or space to do something like this from scratch.

I guess ultimately what I would like to do is buy all the needed stuff over the next few months: engine, axle, tranny, any other little things then drop it all at a shop to have it done. I just want to make sure I buy the right stuff for the right price. I do not need a blower, it just caught my eye when browsing for 440's and I have the for it now. So I kinda figured, if I want to eventually go that route, why not now?

Are you getting it Turn Key?
I'm Guessing about 4,500 for what you need to change it over...
Looks like it has a Merf LittleFeild Blower on top? Thats good stuff, if it is.
Also Guessing it has a Basic 440 long block in it?

I'm With Archie & Lynn pretty much....

My Problem is I just love the Wow factor of a blown motor in a Hot Rod.....

Do me a favor, take a good look at the picture of the motor.
Do you see a torque chain under the driver's side header?
Also, the battery is missing, probably in the trunk.

Might be more engine than you want for a street rig.
Might want to see what he's using for rear tires...

Yeah I'd be looking to get something turnkey if possible even if it isn't this motor. I also found one on eBay that's turnkey with a blower that comes with trans but I'd have to get it shipped whereas I could pick up the other one.

The Chain look to me like it goes all the was up to the front of the head, just in front of the intake manifold...lol

The motor isn't in the car anymore I don't think. I actually was going to buy the whole car with the motor but couldn't make it out in time and he sold it, apparently without the motor.

As for the torque chain, if I go with a motor like this I would spend the $79 to get the shumacher torque strap, they seem to be worth the money and look a lot cleaner.

I like the looks of thismotor too

Mostly the price and the fact it's almost all there minus the 8 3/4 rear end it sounds like I'll need.

What are the small things I need? From what I can tell so far the big stuff is engine, trans, rear axle, drive shaft, motor mounts, radiator, alternator? Anything else?
