I was demonstrating the new found responsiveness* of my Mk3 to friends by blipping the throttle from idle to full throttle and in doing so, I noticed "smoke" coming out from the opening between the intake manifold and the heads where there appears to be a pipe running from the intake manifold through the head to the exhaust side of the heads. I would appreciate comments and pictures if available of what could be happening here.

1st prize would be if I could completely block the the exhaust gas from coming back through the heads to even reach the intake manifold. Any suggestions?

*My 440 is now running with distributor-less ignition using two EDIS coil packs and Megasquirt-2 ECU.

Throw the egr pipe away and block the port at the head with a piece of sheet metal.

thin aluminum will burn out. best to use steel.

Should this be done on the intake side of the head or the exhaust side of the head? (Never had the heads off so I've no idea how these ports are routed).

Should I use an intake/head gasket that has the port blocked off?

Fel-Pro makes a valley pan with the crossover block built in, I've used them and they work fine. BTW, this is not an EGR, it's purpose is to heat the intake for cold weather drivability. Good luck.

I recon its both. This car was most certainly fitted with EGR stuff.
