Locally there is a 440 with Tranny that I could pick up super cheap for a '56 Dodge Truck I'm getting. The truck "HAD" a 440 in it but is long gone. I'm thinking of cleaning this one up.

What I DO know:
- 8330 1973 RB 440 Block
- Forged Crank (has the thinner balancer as a giveaway)
- Carter ThermoQuad Carb
- Short Shaft Brake Drum on Tranny (Motorhome or MAYBE Truck?)
- Pretty Damn Complete Engine/Tranny

No info on head castings, hoping for better than motorhome heads but if so they'll do for now. I know the experts can spot little subtle things as ID's (heads???) so please pick this thing apart!!!!!!

 

My immediate goal for this engine would be to try to fire it up and if I'm lucky even move the truck around the shop a few feet.

 

bocajoe, just pull a valve cover off and the head casting number is there. Motorhome's used the 3751213 head. That head will be fine for a stock rebuild with a small cam,which is what you want for a truck.

Not sure if you checked, but the biggest fit problem with engine transplants are the oil pans. Might want to block that out and make sure it fits.

BTW - I'm one of the guys who's had pretty good luck with the TQs. so it it works, keep it. If it doesn't ...

Thanks for the reply guys! I wanted to yank a valve cover off, but it's strapped on the palette and these guys are kinda jerky if you know what I mean. I'll see if I can get them to cut the metal strap to have access.


Thanks for the tip on the pan, and pardon my ignorance but what is a TQ?

Since you mentioned the oil pan and Ive not figuredout how to post a question. I have a 65 polara which is a c-body. I'm having a 440 built and need to get the oil pan. What will fit my application?
I think the one on the 383 is a mid sump but I cannot not get the car in the air to see for sure.
Next, I'd like to put long tube headers on it as well. Who sells them for c-body mopars? Search engines are not sending me to the correct place and I have spent hours looking

 

Go to. Summits website and put in you car in with a 383/440/426 and search for oil pans and you will get you there. You can find the pan that works for you, your 383 pan and pick up will work.

 

This has probably been long time resolved... but on the TQ... I have NEVER been an internalist... so I bought a spare to mess up... it was EASY to rebuild.

1-10... it was a 4...

So... soak the screws with WD-40 then take pics... open it up and fresh gaskets.

They come in 800/850 cfm... so get the larger primaries.

And re the engine... the triangular cooling heads water jackets are also #4006452 I have a 1972 440-3... with cracked heads...
