Question 440 oil cooler questions

I'm building a 440-to-543 stroker. I'll leave the bulk of the build's information out of this topic for the moment.

I plan on installing an oil cooler, but have never really messed with oiling systems before. I'm running an aftermarket, external oiling system by either Milodon or Melling, and had some questions:

1. I've seen oil coolers run off of a filter adapter, is this really the optimal set-up, or is there a better way?
2. Could I run an oil cooler off of the oil pump itself if I have the required fittings installed? (for example: from the oil pan pickup to oil cooler, then from the oil cooler back to the to oil pump?)
3. Does anyone make a kit in either of these configurations?
4. Is there anything I'm missing here?

Sound to me like the question should be. Do you need the cooler for what your trying to do?
But yes you can run a cooler. I would suggest talking with the pump MFG. They know the best solution for what your going to need with there product. Most likely.
My suggestion would be to put the cooler after your remote oil Filter or Filters adapter and then back to the pan.

I had part of a factory one It had a 2th tap or maybe a T at the oil pressure sender tap and a line running from the cooler to a special fuel pump bolt that was hollow and allowed the oil to drain back into the pan

The sheer horsepower I'm aiming for will deem any and all cooling methods necessary for my build, I'm just confused as far as how the set up will go. I think I'll call the manufacturers directly if I can't figure it out on my own, because like you said, they have the best application info.

Also, i think I was confused about the oil routing, but it's cleared up now.

Thanks for your reply!

Interesting. Since I will be running an external pickup system, I think mine will be routed a bit differently, but I'll look into it. Thanks!

Right, I was thinking aftermarket block too. After my current engine was finished I regretted going with an aluminum aftermarket block. Not the type of part you can change after the fact.

I like challenges, so I'm going to stick with the '73 block I have and build on it! I know the risks, but it's a solid block so I should be alright. If I ruin it, I'll go aftermarket for the next one, but I have a lot of faith in Mopar, so thy will be done.

What exactly would you have done differently? Were you not happy with the Aluminum block?

Thin Thats not all that hard....
Good oil pan
K.B. Or Milidon Oil Pump
Good remote oil filter asm.
Good Size Cooler with a fan
Add a thermo sensor to turn the fan on when you want it to come on.

You make it sound so simple. I think I've just been overthinking things. I'm calling Milodon tomorrow to sketch out a planned application, and ordering parts soon. Thanks again!

I'll post a new thread soon sharing the general theory behind my build, so we will have ample opportunity to chat about it. I have big plans and hopes for it!

Basically everything is planned out except for the oil routing and cooling, but I've almost got a handle on that aspect. I still have some questions and concerns about the final stages though, such as header clearances after the swap and stuff. You can also PM me if you'd like, and I'll reply when I have the chance!
