440 oil pump

Replacing oil pump.
What needs to be done ? Will I have to prime it? I don,t want
To touch the distributor , it's set exactly the way I want it. Hopefully there's another way.
Can I fill the pump & filter with as much oil as possible
Turn the engine over without starting , like I do before startup to get oil pressure? Then start.

Put all the oil I could in the pump before installing it.
Filled filter 3/4 full. Filled engine, turned motor over about 20secs. Let starter cool & then the same one more time once again let starter cool then turned over & had pressure ..... Thanks

40 seconds of cranking with no oil pressure, I don't know man. To keep the timing perfect when pulling the distributor for priming, just mark the housing where the rotor is pointing before pulling it. As long as it's pointing to that same mark upon reassembly your timing will be the same. Of course eyeballing the oil pump drive gear orientation is important too, so the distributor goes back in close to where it was before (so the plug wires all still reach). Sorry I didn't post this earlier, I thought someone else here surely would.

Being skeered of the distributor is just silly. ANYONE working on these girls should know how to do this

Try this:

Pull the filter and LEAVE it off. This releases any "head" the pump has to work against. It should prime in about 1 second or less with the filter removed

If you get oil "out the filter mount" then reinstall the filter and try again. Fill the filter as much as you can.

Are you sure?

You got both the block gasket and the o ring on the pump stub?

Why are you changing the pump at all? If you lost pressure, it might be a pickup issue.

are you sure the threads on the suction tube is sealed? having worked hydraulics a lot i know that oil pumps will pull air on the suction side, long before it will pull oil. it only takes a small opening to let air in. that would not leek oil out.

It always takes several seconds when cranking pressure up before it starts climbing after a oil and filter change or starting after sitting awhile. Does the oil pump loose its prime when oil is drained and filter is removed? If no prior cranking , just change oil and filter then start it would take several seconds for it to come up in street cars as well, (Like most people do ) , this seems better to get pressure before startup.... Never lost pressure it just went down a little and then right back up.. I removed the pump to see what might have caused this. Yes
O ring and gasket were Installed. Thanks

Yeah, if mine's been sitting I'll crank it a few revs before firing it off. After an oil change or sitting for over two weeks I'll pull the distributor and prime it with a drill. I think mine looses it's prime because of the remote oil pickup line though.

Sorry I don't understand what you are saying.

As I said before REMOVE the filter. It should take nor more than a second or two of cranking to get oil out the filter can

It might take "several" seconds to fill the filter up. Fill the filter by hand as best you can. I always used to be pretty careful with this tipping the filter from side to side to expel air that is trapped, and giving it several seconds to "soak in."

Even then it might take 10 seconds on "first start" to get pressure

You can't be serious. Find the problem, first, if there actually is one.

As Carl Sagan would have said, there's been mullion and mullions of these gone bullions and bullions of miles and none o' them had an accumulator, regardless of the brand name.
