440 rear main seal

Dang neoprene rear seals, third try at putting one in seems each time the leak is worse. Going to give up and go to the rope seal. Can it be done with motor in the car? Can you loosen the main bearing caps enough to get it in? Only way I've ever installed rope seals was during crankshaft installation on engine stand from my memory you stuff it in the housing so having a hard time believing you can roll one in. Any experience in putting one in with motor in car would be much appreciated. Thanks

IF you have had that much bad luck trying to get it to stop sealing. I would just pull the motor and do it...

We used black rtv on the side seals instead of the orange strips, filled the groove before sliding in the seal housing, couldn't coat the backside because the transmission is hooked up but could see rtv oozing out the length of the housing also cleaned all the surfaces with carb cleaner so rtv could adhere, so in answer to your question how can I determine whether it's the side seal or main seal?
