440 timing
new to the site !!
i have a 440 in my car. its got me kinda a little puzzeled..
when i pulled it out this spring the car does not want to idle.
driving down the road i can also feel the car surge...
carb is ok after double checking ( eddie carb)
when setting the timing it seems like the vac. adv. isnt coming in. the mark on the balencer doesnt untill about 1500 rpm then dives off.... when leaving a red light it chuggs and sputter and need to be 2 footed till it reachess 1500 rpm then takes off..
Ive checked :
plugs
wires
cap
rotor
carb 2,3,4 times.
vac leaks 2,3,4 times.
msd
etc!!!!
Car has:
stock mostly 440
eddie intake and carb
mild cam
2500 stall
headers .
msd box and coil
Any ideas

also when timing is set (pretty much doesnt matter where) somtimes i can get it to idle but ALWAYS pings after 3000 rpm ...ive had anywhere from 32 to 42 total ... really getting frustrated!!
also fo what its worth ... while its runnings if u detach the vac hose and suck it takes alot to make it move ...
really makes it hard to love mother mopar sometimes!!

Sounds like the carb is gummed up.. What is the compression of the motor ??? As to the timing I would get a timing tape and install.. With the vacuum advance disconnected run the motor a 3K and a just for a max of 36 deg. Then check it at Idle IF it is not at least 10-12 deg you need to modify the advance curve in the dist....
Another remote possibility ? If you have an adapter to a spread bore manifold it may leak ???

there isnt an adapter...and ive had the carb off and cleaned it ..it almost seems like at low rpms there is a miss. but comes to life after 1500 rpm only break up at 3000+ ...
also theres no vac leaks ..ive doubled and triple checked..

Verify accelerator pump, fuel pump, fuel filter and TDC on balancer if stocker.
Your setting the timing with vac. advance disconnected and hose plugged, correct?

Right now as its sits in the garage is 12 adv 32 all in
but also ive had it from 8-15 adv and up as high as 42.. and always starts to ping after 3000 and is a C*&T from a dead stop till it hits 1500 rpm ... ive just order a new set of plugs and wires even though these ones now arent that old and and i had the plugs out last night and cleaned and re-gapped them...there a champion plug with taylor wires. but im gonna try ngk plugs and msd wires..(had good luck with them before) ...

You're not answering all the questions your given so it hard to help you. If this is a problem that started after you got your car out this spring, it is probably fuel related. The alcohol in fuel is hard on rubber parts as in accelerator pump diaphragms that dry out and crack over the winter. You don't say how big the cam is but every 440 I've ever had has liked 35 to 39 total with a very short curve. If you are trying to time your motor with a damper with the outer ring spun, and I've had it happen on a 10 year old stocker, your not even close. The stumble to 1500 and the pinging could be a fuel or fuel/timing or timing issue.

all said and done.
found the vac. adv. was done. replace the canister and thru new plugs and wires on and running like top.
dialed the timing in and now its all well and good.
gonna run it on friday night and see what kind of # shell put up .
hoping to see 12's

I've had my Volare so long that I bought new quarters and a grill from Chrysler when I first put it together, had the rear bumper rechromed and I cast a fiberglass front.
Yours being a 80 and a one year only it might be easier to send it to a rechromer, and at one time you could get the grill after market.
