440 Windage tray

Another question I found as I have been taken my 440 apart, when I took off the oil pan I seen there is no windage tray. The book am following mentions there should be one, did a 1971 RB440 have one as standard? That may be why the oil looked like sludge and a chocolate milkshake? What are your thoughts, when I am done I think I will put a windage tray in- I read that will give me more power? Thanks Joe

I do not know if all 440's came with windage trays but it is a good thing to have when you start to beat on it, as for the chocklate milk oil you may have gotten water in the crank case or condensation from sitting in humid condisions

Joe -

I believe that motor should have come with one. You should be able to find one in bone yards. I've had good luck with www.moparcity.com. Don't leave home without one...

The choc cheesecake oil looks more like a water contamination issue.

I pulled two 1973 440 out of motor homes. One didn't and one did. I have the one I took out for sale cheap. I am pretty sure someone just added it. The pan gasket area was covered with orange silicone. PM me if you want it. I can take a picture of it.

Thanks guys I figured that having one will be better than not, and the engine did sit for a long time. I will replace this shortly.

Check that motor carefully Looks like it had a blown head gasket... Water mixed with oil...

Thanks I was concerned with that- I looked at the gaskets there is not an indication of a blown or leak. Once I take it to the machaine shop I will let them know how the gaskets looked. Thanks Joe

Just have them mill the deck .010 or more if needed to clean it up.

I've never seen a 440 with that much sludge in the bottom end. But if you are rebuilding it- not a problem. It looks as if the pan was full of mud and it sloshed around and stuck to part of the crank. Cause the throws appear very clean in the bottom of the pic. Chrysler techs claim a windage tray is worth about 15 horse power at 5000 RPM. This is mainly due to the rapidly spinning assembly not being impeded by the oil spray whipping around in there. So definitely use one in any H P build. I got a used one, and will put it in my 440 when I rebuild the bottom end. Its virtually free Horsepower!
