'78 D100 refresh

Well I finally got around to pulling the motor out of the old truck for some freshening up. It is a 440 with heads that have been worked over but I'm not sure what cam is in it now. I don't plan on doing a lot with it, just cleaning and a little dress up but was wondering if anyone has tried the whiplash cam from Hughes engines and if so how did you like it for a street/strip build? Also while I was pulling everything apart I noticed the exhaust ports have a ton of carbon build up and was wondering if this could cause a bog feeling just off idle.

How much build up are we talking about?

It's about a 3/8 -1/2" All the way around. The port is about half the size that it should be. I have been trying to tune out the bog feeling with the carb and timing but couldn't get it where it should be. If I hit it hard from idle it will sometimes die.

Most of the build up is I the crossover port on the intake side but there is a little in all exhaust ports. It has the crossover ports blocked off by the valley pan but there is a lot of crap in there. Is it worth it to pull the heads and clean out these ports or should I not worry about it since I'm not using them anyway?

Does this 440 use oil at all, I've seen bad exhaust valve seals leave a build up in the ports, there's enough heat to burn off the oil but leave a hard crust in the ports.

As I'm thinking about this, I don't think I've had one set of BB heads that didn't need guides worked, knurled, liners or bronze guides.

It does use a little oil but I haven't really ran it enough to see how much. I have only owned it for about a year and have put less than 300 miles on it. I mostly tore into it because the engine bay was a mess and needed some clean up. It all started with a blown thermostat gasket and now I'm over $1500 into just dress up mostly. Funny how things snowball like that I guess.

I think if I had the motor out, even without doing a compression test, I would pull the heads and have a valve job done.

I think that is what I will end up doing. It will be a lot easier with everything out and accessible. Thanks.

Does anyone have any experience with the whiplash cam from Hughes engines for a 440?
