Bad Fumes
Bad Fumes
I bought a 71 Challenger which has a bad exhaust fume/odor in it only when the windows are rolled down. It is more of an exhaust odor than a raw gas smell and only occurs when either of the windows are down. I replaced the exhaust system (it needed one anyway) but the problem persists, it seems to come from the trunk area. I have also replaced the trunk seal and the trunk lid closes tight. It does have the emission vapour tube on the right wheel well in the trunk, but all the lines and hoses from the tank appear to be in good shape. The car is in good shape and does not have any holes in the floor. I am not sure what else to check.
Anyone have any ideas?

Make sure all the breathers are hooked up in the engine compartment and the PCV valve is working good? That should handle under the hood...
My other suggestions..... Recheck the exhaust for any leaks in this case...
This next one might sound a little stupid..But just give it a try.. Take a couple pieces of cardboard, and make 2 - 6" longer tail pipe extension, tape it too the pipe ends and take for a short test drive... See if the smell goes away?
Keep us posted...
Will stay tuned....

Check for holes / rust under the car or anywhere in the rear body area. Get in the trunk on a bright sunny day with a helper and look for light. Have the helper move a bright lamp around under the car same thing.
What happens is the car creates a vacuum as it moves, and sucks exhaust gas up behind and under the car.

Bob,
Good points. The engine does not have a PCV. It has a breather on one side and an oil cap on the other. I will add a PCV and see if that helps.
I will try those fancy exhaust tips too. They are not patented are they?
