Best use of $10,000 on a Gen 3 Hemi
Hello all,
I've been surfing around for ages trying to figure out what I should do. I have a line on a 1973 Barracuda and I plan to do the pro touring thing with driveline and suspension. To that end, I've been trying to figure out which way to go with the engine.
I want to use the Gen 3 Hemi, and thought a built-up 5.7 was the way to go. Stroker kit, cam, intake, computer reprogram, headers; all that good stuff. I've seen take-outs and even factory rebuilds in the $2000-3000 range with computer and often accessories.
Recently, though, I've realized that the 6.4s are coming down a little in price. I've found Ebay take-outs in the $7000 range and a place called Cleveland Engine Supply (or something like that) offer 'pallet' combos, where they send you everything you could ever need for a swap, from engine, accessories, fuel tank, electronics, even the ABS system. Saw one in the $8500-9000 range recently.
That begs the question: which engine is the best use of a given amount of money, let's say $10,000. The 5.7 would need a total rebuild, and people seem to say 450 hp is doable. The 6.4 could probably do 500 with a cam and computer reprogram, at least according to the web pages I've read.
I don't know anyone personally who's rebuilt either engine for big power, so I'm hoping some of you guys can chime in. Most horsepower/bang for the buck. No forced induction; this is a muscle car and needs a lumpy cam sound, not a wheezy blower sound. Not to rip on forced induction, mind you; my F-150 has two turbos on it and it hauls anything I can hitch it up to.
So, what should I drop in my E-body?
Thanks,
Ryan
