Cam removal help
I am trying to remove the cam in my 68 Newport. Took the fuel pump off and removed the distributor does the oil pump have to be taken off or do you pull thegear out because I know there is a bushing nust did want to pull it out and have anything drop into the motor.

the fuel pump push rod may need to come out. a pipe thread plug under the fuel pump mount. take the plug out. the push rod should fall out. then check that the rod is not worn. if it is you need to a new one. on a room temp engine put grease on the rod, push it to contact the cam. use a small welding rod to hold the pump rod up, then tip the pump as you put it in. and bolt the pump on. then put the plug in. but i like electric fuel pumps. on carbed engine. i put a override switch to fill the carb before starting. saves on the starter, battery.

I took the pushrod out for the fuel pump, it is the oil pump gear that goes with the distributor, I took the distributor out I just want to know if the gear that goes into the oil pump the oil pump gear just pulls out with the bushing.

Not clear to me DID the bushing come out with the gear?
IS the bushing worn?
If neither, might be no need to replace it.
Additionally, the bushing does not necessarily "light press in." ORIGINAL type bushings press in and become COMPRESSED. The installation tool BURNISHES the bushing as the tool is jacked back out of the bushing
There ARE aftermarket bushings which do not need to be burnished. Or so I've been told. DO NOT ream them!!!
REFER !!!! to your service manual!!! (which I know!! you !! have!!)

YES the gear needs to come out. Take a large screwdriver and put it in the slot where the dist. came out. Turn it counter clockwise and it will come right out.

Ok, I will work on getting it out, I thought I had to remove the oil pump that will save time now, still new at this so I am taking my time making sure I do it right.

It's hard to find pictures or any kind of references. Probably looking in the wrong places, so all I do is pull the oil pump gear out get the busing out after, then put new bushing in and put oil pump shaft back in.
