Carb on my 273 v8
Hey guys,
I need to replace the carb on the 273 in my 64 Cuda. I am keeping the car more or less stock, however I would be interested in "upgrading" to a better 2 bbl carb. I have no interest in switching the intake to fit a 4 bbl.
So question is, what carb should I put on it? I would like the original air cleaner to still fit and whatnot. Here is the original carb:

Thanks guys,
Aaron

i have worked on tons of the stock 2 bbl. as far as 2bbls go it is a very good carb, if in good shape. here is hint. two of the screws co from the top casting to the bottom casting, be sure you dont over tighten them or that will warp the castings. and the float level should be 1/4 inch. on gain in a different level like the AFBs.

Okay cool. The carb that is currently on there is giving me too much trouble. It's shot really. So I was just going to replace it with a new one. But I was just curious if I should up it to a 500 cfm 2 bbl or something a bit more performance oriented.

The BBD has always been on of my favourite carbs, I like the Holley 500cfm too.
I would go with the Holley, a slight decrease in fuel mileage but the increase in fun wins out for me.
Problem is the mounting flange size. If you put on an adapter it will neck down to small size spoiling any gains and give tuning trouble.
Best way is with 4 barrel intake and adapter, but at that point a small 4 barrel would be even better for gas mileage and performance.
Being a '64 the intake manifold bolt angle becomes another bother which can be overcome.

Yeah I am very aware of the bolt angle. As I said, I want to stay stock (So original intake and a 2 bbl). I suppose I will just pick up a new Carter. Plus the $300 price difference will go a long way on my new stainless exhaust.
Thanks guys!

you should find how tos on the internet. i have done lots. just pay attention to how it came apart. keep it clean. BIG hint. on AFBs do NOT try to take the jets out if you dont have to. the jet get stuck some times. and get damaged easy if you dont know the trick.

Thanks for the input. I had pulled the Carb apart and done massive amounts of cleaning to it. However I just could not get it to flow evenly on both sides, causing my passenger side cylanders to not fire properly at certain rpms.
So I actually purchased a new Carter and put it on last night. It looks much better, and so far seems to be taking care of the previous issue. I just have some tuning to do to it, as it appears the lowest idle I can set it at has ny engine at like 1800 rpm, hah.

Slowly yes, my biggest issue is getting insurance on the car. I have it registered Historically, however I cannot seem to get historical insurance on it because I am under 25. Very frustrating.

i hope you didnt take the throttle plates out. if you take them out they are not easy to put back right. the trick is you should NOT be able to see ANY light around the edges. any light will let air past. and its like having two carbs out of sync.
