Engine Overheating

Engine Overheating
I've recently had a timing chain issue, gear teeths were worn out.
I got that fixed and they checked the distributor gear and the compression. All is good no bent valves.
The car ran well until I took it for a trip on a hot day on the freeway. When letting go of the gas, the OIL light would strobe and then stay steady until I pressed on the gas again. The temp gauge was rising as well and I eventually broke down.
I have not the slightest clue as what could have happened except relating it to the timing chain job.
Nothing is leaking, new oil and flushed coolant, but smoke was coming out of the air filter pan.
1972 Polara 400 engine. Any ideas on what could be wrong?
Many thanks!
Edit: The car starts but now makes this nasty blop blop blop noise..

It's hard without actually hearing the noise. The fact that the oil light was on ? doesn't sound good. Did they clean it good when they did the timing chain If a lot of crap fell into the engine The oil pick up could be clogged causing low oil pressure. Put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on it and check the oil pressure.. Do another compression test..

Also, I did a bit of a research, it couldn't be an advanced timing, could it?

Take this as you wish. Recently i have been rebuilding 2.7 Chrysler motors. I have found the factory stat is 3/4" longer than any of the aftermarket junk out there. It opens wider, and feels about twice as heavy, and has more flow than any of the aftermarket crap out there. Could that be possible with the China-made crap that that is being sold out there?
