Engine swop info on a 273 Barracuda.
Worn 273 Engine.
Hello Mopar people.
Thank you for letting me join your forum.
I really need some help with my worn engine.
I have a 1967 Barracuda with a 273 engine, (not numbers matching)
I have took the engine out of my car because it was smoking on start up. Well upon inspection It appears the engine needs a complete rebuild.
It might be better to fit a crate 360.
Is a 360 engine physically the same size as my 273, would it drop straight in.
My Trans is a 904.
Many Thanks
Mark.

360 will fit and should not be a problem.... With that said, It is not just a direct swap. But i dont remember all that was needed to make the swap. But its not to painful as I remember.... Keep us posted and Welcome to the site.
Welcome to the forum.
I believe the motor mount bracket on the drivers side is different on the 360. Other than that you will need a flexplate for a 360 but it will bolt to the 904. Headers, radiator and maybe a transmission upgrade might be needed.

You will need to either purchase these as a set

or make your own!

Or. like mentioned build the 273 into a zinger!

Hi Skwerly
Thanks for your reply.
I would love to - but I think it needs to much doing to it.
HEADS
The valve seats are worn/sunk I would need new seats.
The valve stem guide are oval - so they would need machining and bushes fitted.
ENGINE
The bores are worn and one of them has 2 score marks - could be a broken piston ring. ?
I haven't stripped the block down yet to check the crank bearings etc.
Are parts still available to rebuild it
Its a bit difficult to get parts because Im in the UK - but I could get them shipped to me.

That Does make it a challenge being in the UK... If you don't have a resource then yes you have to import the stuff.... Ouch.... Blue Print Engines..... https://blueprintengines.com/ is a good one. if you do not have any one in the UK to source and build you a engine. But I thought I had seen a few guys building stuff over there?????
However it might be easier to check with the guys in Italy and see if it may be cheaper to ship you one?

Yes you have to make sure you get all the matching parts for a 360 build. You can Google that info. But that would really make that Cuda fly...

Hi Bob.
We have got some engine builders in the uk.
But I was just seeing what was out there.
Thanks for your comments.
‘I’ll keep looking.
Im just a bit hesitant about fitting a 360.
My 1967 barracuda has a later 73 k frame and later engine mounts.

I've been reading on the 273 for other reasons and it appears that there's not much for pistons available, only one or two suppliers. The 273 has a following but if it's not original to the car I'd replace it with a 318 or 360 in a heartbeat. 🙂
