How much HP can a stock crank and block handle

It looks like I need to order new pistons for the 440. If I'm going that route, I'm thinking maybe I should go all out and order rods that will handle my racing needs. I'm limited to 470 Cu In and an 871 blower. The chevy motor is hitting just shy of 1000 HP on a stock block. Can the 440 block handle that?

I'm thinking offset grind the rod journals to the Chevy 2.200 size, which should yield about 3.90 stroke. At 4.35 bore that would put me at 464 Cu. In.. While not as good as using a low deck I could make it work for a while.

But if I add a stud girdle, will the crank and block handle 1000 HP? I really want to get the racing program to be all Mopar. But, until mamma gets her new house, the racing program is on a serious diet. So no new Indy block this year.

I think a 1000 is really pushing it... I have not seen many of them live at that rate.
I'm pretty sure your going to need to go with the after market block and stroker kit... I think you will find it less expensive in the long run..
But dont get me wrong... 440 Blocks are strong..... Long arm strokers run darn good...

in that HP range you are doing a full race engine. even though i have not done any at that level. but i think there are good books for that level. but my guess is all most every thing will need set up way different that stock. and i have been told be sure the oil system is right. ill bet racerhog and the other cats here, can give you some good info. see he beat me to it.

Fit it with a really good engine diaper or you're going to kill a lot of fish. I don't believe the Chevy made 1000HP, it was most likely 1000 donkeypower.

987 set to kill, but I said it was just shy of 1000. The dyno guy said you can always get more out of them, just add more boost and alcohol. To make it live, it would normally run between 850 and 900. But sometimes I might want it all so I can run with the big dogs. There is a limit to how much HP the boat and prop can handle, but some of the capsule boats are reported to be running over 2000 HP on full tilt race engines. My budget won't support that at the moment.

What do you think a safe power level would be for it?

In a perfect world, I would be building an Indy Aluminum 426 block sleaved to 4.465. With a 3.75 crank I'd be right at my CU IN limit and it should rev like no tomorrow. Throw on good double plug Hemi heads and I could see pushing closer to 1500 HP.

850 is about it as far as I see it.... Much more than that is a crap shoot....

If your going with a wedge head... Make sure to look into the Keith Black Blocks... Those are my choice for the most part....
