Is my mechanical fuel pump shot?
Is my mechanical fuel pump shot?
Greetings Crew Members.
So recently I've noticed a surging sensation while cruising "The Ghost". Kinda like a pulsing feeling when peacefully motoring down the road in my 1969 Chrysler Newport Custom. Never really had snappy throttle response from the 383 2-barrel but it's not a race car.
Since the surging started, pulling away from intersections has become an even slower process. It wants to stumble and fall on it's face if I don't WAIT for the acceleration to happen.
I have a feeling E85 has destroyed the pump diaphragm. Interested in your thoughts.
Ahoy, Captain Chrysler

If infact you have E-85 in your tank and not E-10 you can expect all sorts of lean conditions happening on top of the accelerator pump failure including fuel pump failure. Alcohol is hard on the rubber parts. Thirty years ago I quit using thermoquad 4v carbs because I couldn't find power valves that would stand up to E-10 and regular unleaded gas was terrible.
unless you have modified your carb to double the fuel flow it's running lean.

Greetings Iowan.
You make a good point. It's most likely I'm using E-10 in "The Ghost". I've read about bad things that can happen to older vehicles.
So I should rebuild my Carter BBD and replace the fuel pump? My 383 wakes-up ritch. Black marks on the garage floor from the single exhaust when I start it up. Once I kick it down off high idle it doesn't smell so gassy...
Curious, C.C.

It could be time for a carb kit, I highly recommend using regular unleaded in vehicles that sit and don't get driven much. The alcohol in fuel will pull water from the air the tank adding to drivability problems. It's hard on power valves and fuel pumps and it causes issues with the metals in the carb.
I've seen small engine's have have a pint of water in the fuel tank and a pickup truck with at least two gallons of water in the tank.
I've tested E-10 that was 30 percent alcohol so you don't know what your getting.

Greetings Skwerly.
I put fresh plugs in last Fall. I have not checked them since this surging issue started. To me it acts like it's fuel starved.
I realize a 2-barrel isn't going to snap my neck but I should have better acceleration than this. Poorer gitty-up is a lot more noticeable since the pulsing/surging started.
Stirred not shaken, C.C.

I always use high test when I buy go-juice and I drive The Ghost weekly.
I'll replace my fuel pump and see if it makes a difference. That may help the surging.
I also suspect the accelerator pump isn't giving the shot of gas pulling away from intersections. I'll post the results.
It's only money, C.C.
