Oddball vacuum advance?

Hello to all, new to the forum and I had a question for a buddy of mine. He has a '67 Polara with a 440 out of a '72 something or other (I can get casting #s if we need them) and we're having a hard time finding him a vacuum advance. I work at O'Reilly, and every one we can find has the arm bent the wrong way, like this one: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2818&ppt=C0334

On every one we can find, the arm comes out and bends down like in the second pic of the one above, but on his the arm starts out low then bends up. What am I missing here?? I've always loved the Chryslers, but I'm more of a GM person (I know ) so I don't have many resources for this one at my disposal.

Any insight is greatly appreciated!!

How are you looking it up ?? 67 dist would have points and 72? would have electronic dist. Would require different advance units.. Are you sure it is from a 440? was it working before ?

It sounds more like they are finding only the small block advance instead of the big block advance.

Is that the one you need?

First off, thanks to everyone for the quick replies! I could get him a whole distributor too and I offered, but that wasn't a route he wanted to take. I haven't seen the car yet so all I know is what he tells me, but he actually brought me his distributor and we popped the advance out of it there. Just from looking at pics I'm sure that '72 is at least pretty close for a year as his has the curved flange where it mounts to the side of the housing, like the one in my link above and in the jacilynn s posted.

We first looked it up for a '72 truck with a 440 and it didn't look quite right, so then I started going through the BWD book looking at all of them. It might have just been bad picture quality and angle/view of the parts that we saw before, but that v346 is sure looking right now. It was about a week ago now that we first ran into all this and we were both in a bit of a rush so I ordered in the v346 and we'll see what happens.

This is a great example of why auto parts in this country has become such a PITA O'Really's and other Big Box stores don't properly arm their people with the information we used to have at our fingertips, in printed catalogs, long before Al Gore invented the internet.

What kind of distributor is this? Mopar aluminum, points, breakerless? Older Autolite/ Prestolite dual points? AFTERMARKET of some sort?

Year ago we would have just grabbed the numerical interchange and looked up the distributor number

Also do NOT go by the "photos" in the pictoral guide!!! They often are a "representation" of some general part.

Yeah I have to agree, we still have most of the old books, and quite often I find myself using them more than the computer, especially for the old stuff. They completely overhauled our computer system a few months ago, and I find it to be more and more of a joke every day. I think it's safe to say I know my stuff a little better than most, especially in my store, but I'll be the first to admit that I still have a LOT to learn, especially with these Chryslers. Like I said before, if it was a GM part, I could have grabbed it off the shelf w/o even looking it up and been done with it, but I just don't know these Chryslers even half as well.

Its a points distributor, I'm sure of that. There was a number stamped on the advance that I tried interchanging, either a two digit number or a number and a letter, but no dice on it either.

And yes you're right, pictures a lot of time are generic representations. Borg Warner's usually pretty good at not doing that, but it's still hard to tell until the actual part is in your hand. I ordered in the v341 and v346 yesterday and they should have come in this morning. I'm off today but if my buddy calls me back I'll probably go meet him there and see what we can find out.

If it was a points distributor it would have been pre 1970 actually. A good rule of thumb is to say they stopped points in 1970 even though they still had points on some in 1970.

still the v 346 vacuum advance anyways.
