Question Official name for a 440 stroker?

I often get very mixed responses when asking that question...so i thought id post it here to see what kind of opinions we get.

When people would ask me what size engine i am putting into my 72 RR i would always respond "440". But my engine has a stroker kit in it, and after doing the math, the displacement is now 493 cu in.

So what is technically the right name for this size engine setup?...
a 440?
a 440 stroker?
or simply a 493?

My response in general would be "It is a 493 C.I. Stroked 440"......

And if I'm Up for a street race, it would be "It is a 273 C.I. that runs on gas".
And I need 6 car length's and the go.

I guess my train of thought is that when you say "ive got a 440", your literally refering too the displacement number. and although saying "It is a 493 C.I. Stroked 440" is correct.....would it really be incorrect to just say 493 instead (since that is actually the new displacement)

Heres another way to look at it....(for example) would it be taboo to change the 440+6 decals to 493+6 ??

You can put it any way you really want to put it......"In my opinion"

Back in the day we took 426 Hemis and destroked them to 396's for fuel dragsters... I use to say "It's a 396"... Folks would say Chevy?.. I'd just chuckle.

As for the Badge.... If you like to put that up there, Do so.... Mine use to say 505C.I. or what ever I had at the time..

Leave it as a 440-6 and sand bag the guy who thinks he got you beat...Technically it is still a stroked 440...Bill

haha, a 318 .030 over is a 322, so that's what i'm telling folks it is--unless, as has been said, someone wants to race. then it's a 318 again.

I would just say 496. Let em wonder and act like they know what they are talking about when they nod their heads.

The thing I just HATE about this kind of thing is (example) the Chivy freeks. To them, a "383" has become a popular "stroker" combo with a Chivy. To me, "growin up" it ALWAYS used to be "283 punched 301" or whatever the combo was

To put this more bluntly, a 383 is not and never will be a fecking Chivy engine!!!!
