Oil Pressure????

I am putting together a 451, 400 block and 440 crank, Indy heads and Comp Hyd. roller cam. The engine is together but when I try to prime the oiling system I cannot get it to pump up. New Melling oil pump and we have checked the oil pick up to insure no leaks. I pulled the filter off and turned the pump and all I get is a splattering of oil. Any Ideas. The guy that owns the car is about to give up on the 66 2door Satellite. His previous engine just threw stuff together and did not care as long as he got paid. We are now on the second block 6th set of roller lifter second camshaft. He is now using my machinist everything looked good up to this oil pressure issue. I have not messed much big block Mopars since the 70's when my friend Jerry Hurley and I ran a 70 Cuda in SS/DA out of Barnette Automotive in Atlanta. Please help....Tony

counter clockwise I got. Vasoline I have not tried but will tomorrow morning. When I first tried priming the engine I turned the primer tool by hand. I got oil up to the oil pressure fitting outlet. I then put an oil gauge into the outlet and proceeded to turn the priming tool with a drill at slow speed. I got 70 pounds for about 30 seconds. The pressure then dropped and I could not get it to pick back up.. Got another pump coming tomorrow I'll pack it and give it another try..Tony

If you got that far, 5 tons of vaseline won't help. I'd guess "something has changed."

Start by carefully examining pump drive shaft for damage. "Feel" with your fingers to try and determine if the drive hex in the pump is damaged.

You have the o ring on the snout of the pump where it enters the engine?

Pull the pump off, pull it apart and inspect. You have a shop manual?
