Possible issues
Ok i want to build a new engine for my truck that can be a little fun have done alot of research on the subject and have come up with what i want to do but i am worried about valves hitting the pistons and to high of a compression ratio for pump gas.
I want to mill 360 heads casting number 302 down 0.050 and get the keith black flat top pistions and zero the deck. From what i have read milling the heads that much with put me around 52cc and just under 10.0.1 compression but can find no numbers on how much i will have to mill the the deck with those pisonts to zero it.
If anybody has zeroed the deck with those pistions can you shine a little light on the subject for me?
Or can anybody shine any light on the subject about fitment after taking away from the heads and the deck?
I have the whole build thought out on paper but dont want to start getting parts untill i know there will be no problems. Also this will be a 318 block since i like to rev.
318 block
273 crank
Rods unknown
Keith black flat top pistons
360 heads
Cam unknown
Intake edelbrock dual plane intake
750 cfm 4 barral
Thats about as far as i have gotten on the plans still doing reading on the rest of the parts. Any input?

Before you do any block or head machining get knowledgeable about Piston Compression Height. Block height is 9.60" minus 1/2 the stroke and rod length leaves 1.822". Most stock 318 pistons are 1.72"-1.77". many aftermarket manufacturers like 1.81" C.H. leaving .012" down in the hole.
If you know for sure what your length is you can buy a piston with the right C.H. to minimize block deck machining.
Once you have that set Quench, Compression Ratio with Gasket thickness can all be calculated and adjusted.

Here is a link to the pistons

you were right about the ch i am also leaning to keeping the stock rods. I am also not expecting to have an over night build as parts do cost a bit of money plus all the machine work that is going to have to go into it i just want to avoid any custom part orders. Because if that is the case i will call it off.

Are you building this out of parts you already have laying around? I would sure start out with a 360 block and crank, and some Magnum (308?) heads. To be honest I'm a big block guy, but thought I'd add in my 2 cents.

No just not looking for any big hp and still want to be able to drive it on the snow.

Our truck's 318 has 302 heads with the original small valves. My son did a port match and some pocket porting then a 3 angle grind. The cam is a xe256h and a new street demon (goggle) carb.
The small valves and ports keeps the velocity up for very good low end torque and responce in this heavy vehicle. The cam has enough high end so when the carb opens up it moves, with the mufflers my youngest son put on it (too loud for me) it sounds like a hot muscle car when it drives by. It has a 3.55 gear.
Super happy with this combo and glad I stayed on the small side and didn't use my 360 2.02" heads.
