RacerHog, can you share the knowledge?

Hey Man, I've been reading a lot here about 4-barrel carbs and intakes.
I gotta' tell ya', I'm completely LOST. Where do ya' start?
Hopefully, this thread will help others in the same 'boat' as I am.

Can you give me a compass heading?

I've been looking-into converting my 1969 Chrysler Newport Custom "fuselage" from the stock 2-barrel carb and intake to a 4-barrel set-up. The bone stock 383 runs strong. No leaks, no valve noise- GREAT old motor. I've been stickin' my foot in it- in low gear, and "Casper" seems to make good power to (guessing) 6000RPM with no valve float. Big bore, short stroke.

More research revealed that Mopar offered these 2-barrel 383's as a cost savings option to the customer, not for fuel economy. After all, it was 1969.

Also discovered my 2-barrel has larger 'doors' than the primaries on a 4-barrel. So, I'm NOT saving any MPG money, I'm letting a 383 big block sleep under my hood.

Here's where you can give me a 'bearing'.
I just don't know where to begin regarding buying the 'right' pieces/parts for the swap.
Should I go to a Mopar salvage yard and buy the intake, carb and kick-down linkage off another car? What am I looking for: any 383 4-barrel?
If I find a 440 with a 4-barrel, will that work?

Or should I go with aftermarket hardware? Perhaps 'they' have better matched flow bench-tested goodies that'll make my 383 wake-up 'more better'.

I can't afford to make my 4000lb+ 'yacht' break my neck on a hard launch. I'm just looking for a little more performance. I don't want a fire breathing drag strip car, I don't want a set-up that won't be friendly and dependable. But, I don't want to spend the for just a mild passing gear growl.

I guess I'm not sure what I'm looking for. My 97,000 mile motor has the 1969 stock 9.2:1 pistons and makes 290HP.
Maybe the 4-barrel will push it to 325 horse?

You ARE Mr. MoPar, and always willing to lend a hand. I truely appreciate any dirrection you can give me.
I totally dig my old 'boat'. "Casper" gets lots of looks and strangers asking questions. The MagnaFlow glass pack sounds GREAT!

Thank you-thank you RacerHog.

Not Bob the Racerhog but he will correct me if I'm wrong we are brothers from a different state...I would go with a performer aluminum intake and a 650 vac.sec.Holley ( I know Bob likes Holley's) The reason will be a weight loss on the intake...You could also buy the set which would give you an Edlebrock performer carb but Bob doesnt like them as much as the Holley...Just my pennies worth...Love ya Bob...Bill

IMHO. here is some info on that year model. in the late 60s the 383 had 2 versons the 2 bbl and the 4 bbl. the 2 bbl had lower compression I.E reg gas. the 4 bbl had 10.1 C.R. and the 4 bbl had a little bigger cam not much, in some years not others. the thing most people miss is that the two have different cables length and brackets., and the trans linkage is different. this is cause the pin for the pull cable is more to the left and more forward. a intake manifold that didnt come with an A/C bracket may not be machined for an A/C bracket. i think this happened to me once. so double check this my be for the 383 and 440. but most 440 was on a new yorker which most had A/C.

Boompy..... Really I think you should just enjoy the car for now.... Really.
More later...

Bill.... Yes. Caters make great Wheel Chalks... Hands Down the best....
Good Advise.... We need to sit down for coffee...

Moe.... Dam Moe... Thats pretty Spot on.. I new if we shook you hard enough we would jar something Good Loose up there.....

Boompy.....
You will have to stay with the 361-383-400 Stuff.... 440 Will not fit....
And yes you will need what both these guys already said. Use the Performer Non-EGR Intake manifold.
Get the carb w/Electric Choke... W/ Vacuum Secondaries...
Linkage, Cables For that will be a must have. New or used dont matter. But must be for the 4 barrel Carburetor and Automatic 727 Transmission.

Dont wing it past 5500 For to long.... Or all the rods will be hanging out of it on the side of the road....

Hope this answered your question.... ????

Here is a Video For you

MANY thanks to all you Mopar instructors. Thanks for taking the time.
You're what makes this forum so GREAT.
Ya'll saved me a bunch of head scratching, tool throwing, and dough.

For now, I think I'll spend my money on a good can of car wax.

I gotta' figure-out how to tie my right foot to the seat and operate the peddles with my left.
That should keep me from twisting my motor to pieces.
