Stock 318

So I’ve currently got a bone stock 318 in my Plymouth fury and I’ve been driving it fine it’s been reliable, but I’m to the point where I want to get a little more out of it. I just don’t know where to start. Please any suggestions or ideas?

I guess I would ask how much power are you looking for?
A standard build up would have a cam, carb and headers along with a nice dual exhaust system.
but the first thing you can do is make sure everything is working as it should as in tune up.
If you want to double the horse power a 360 would be a good idea. Just the increase in stroke and displacement will get you moving faster.
let us know what your thinking.

Some is personal preference, some depends on budget and some on skill set or access to a good mechanic.

Typical for a newbie (based on $$$ and ease of conversion):

1. Intake manifold and carb. / New ignition (you didn't mention year or type of ignition).

2. Headers/new exhaust

3. Cam

Choices for the above will depend on current trans/converter and diff/gears and expected upgrades to these later.

Other option would be a 360 crate motor.

Sorry, you didn't give us a lot to go on.

I was thinking about pulling the 318 and putting in a 383 but i was still a little unsure I think I’m more looking for a bigger engine to play with. Thanks for the advice with way, so do you think a 360 would be better over the 383?

Thank you for the reply and it’s a 1967 Plymouth fury iii right now it just has the stock 318 like I said with a 2 barrel carb on it. I was thinking about pulling the engine and dropping in a 383 or would the 360 be a better option?

Big blocks will give you more torque, and that's a good thing, but the conversion will be trickier (special motor mounts, new tranny, might have to modify the drive shaft). If you're thinking that way, just go to a 440. The 360 would be more of a drop in, so it's your call.

Also:
Since you're most likely running a points distributor, switching to a Mopar electronic would be high on my list of things to do.
If you want to stay with the 318, most of the parts will transfer over to a 360 later on.

The 318, 340 and 360 will bolt up to the transmission you have. A 383 or 440 have to have a 727 torque flight for a big block so you would need to come up with the new transmission.
A 360 swap is the easiest way to get more engine size economically.
When I was in high school back in the 70s I had a friend who had a 67 Furry with a 318. His uncle was the automatic transmission guy in town so he had the hardest shifting transmission I've ever seen in a street car. The 318 ran good also.

Don't forget that 360 can be made into a 408 c.i., I agree with staying small block for ease of swap.

Back in high school I owned a ‘68 Barracuda with a 318/727.
I dropped a few hundred bucks on a Weiand high rise intake and a nice carb. Produced some nice extra hp on a small budget. Nothing crazy, but definitely fun and above avg power.

Look at intake/carb kits, they really aren’t too expensive and it’s a quick easy weekend project. DEFINITELY upgrade your distributor to electronic, because those old points are garbage and will leave you stuck on the side of the road adjusting the gap all the time.

If if I could do it over I’d have added a cam and possibly heads, to have a nice matched top end system and a real nice amount of power.

You can also try an digital EDIS-8 ignition setup. 400 bucks ish for an easy to tune, reliable and effective ignition system. Running it now for months on my slant. Get 30% ish more torque on lpg. Maybe something for the 318/360 build.
