Stock LA 318 timing?

having trouble reading the timing chain cover I've replaced alot of the ignition components including the distributor before finding out it was that wire shorting out it's close but I wanna hit it with a timing gun but not sure where to set it at on the timing cover it says 12 btc on the inner fender guessing that mean before top center? And not exactly sure where the 12 is at on the timing cover it just has 10-0-10 it's a stock 318

If it has 10 -0- 10 you would set it just after the last ten or
10 - 0 - 10 11 12
if that makes sence.

What year is it? I had a '68 and could neeeeeeever time it with a gun. Either the chain had jumped or the damper spun, something. if you timed it where the book said the car would die. Myself, my friends and a few mechanics all tried to no avail. You may have to end up ear timing it.

Turn the dizzy until you get the highest idle, then back it off like a quarter inch, half inch so it doesn’t ping. Then fine tune from there.

It's very possible that the damper has spun the outer ring. It should be replaced with a new on.
