Just wondering, When putting a thermostat in a small block mopar Does the Gasket go in first and the thermostat sits on gasket, or is it the other way around?

I asked this of many people and get either way.
Which is it?

Look for a groove in the housing, it's been a long time so I could be wrong???? That's where the thermostat goes then the gasket
