Hello,

I rotated the engine today and forgot to put the Dizzy back before doin so, can I still get it back in time later? Would a Timing Light help?
I believe my Haynes Manual says set 5 degrees BTDC

Sure you can... Stick your finger in the #1 hole turn the motor till you feel it come up on compression and set it on TDC and drop it in.... Should be good to go !!!

Is Compression when air blows ur finger out and would using the trigger make it easier when doing that method? Does the Vac Adv on the dizzy usually point to the pass side or drivers side?

Drivers side as I recall. Oil sender is on opposite side I would set timing to 10-12 deg

Vacuum canister points to the passenger's side (right side). The oil pump drive slot should be along a line pointed at the first intake manifold bolt on left side. With all in place make sure you adjust rotor slightly to be before #1 plug wire terminal for advanced timing for quick fire up and have timing light ready.

To adjust oil pump slot use a large slot screwdriver to rotate it and it should walk up with a bit of a wiggle.

Also, when u go to set the timing, does both the dizzy & carb need to be plugged? & is the valve train IEIEIEIE or IEEIIEEI?

Only side needs plugged is manifold, and on engines with "ported" vacuum, you really don't even need that.

Why you need to know valve sequence?

All you have to do is look

Outer two are exhaust, center two are exhaust so E - I I - E E - I I - E

Dumb question, does all but the #1 spark plug need to be in before finding TDC?

Not dumb. It's easier finding TDC with them all out as the engine will turn over much easier.

Find it put them all in then do your wires. I usually put a pen mark cylinder number on the boot.

I know this question will be coming so hear is the answer... #1 is the front plug on the left bank (drivers side) and the firing order is 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2... clockwise on the dizzy... Hope this helps you....Also when you are on TDC the dist. rotor should point dead straight ahead if it doesn't, the oil pump drive is out of index...And needs to be adjusted by turning it counter clockwise with a flat screw driver/oil pump priming tool until it does point straight ahead. (The gear will come out of the cam and allow you to move it to the proper index then just turn it clockwise to lock it back in to the cam to be done right)...Bill

#10 and what Bill said. Straight ahead and match #1 plug wire to it. Dan.

No. As long as you have room for the vacuum canister to move when timing it.
