Hi, guys. New to the forum here. I've been shopping for a new cam for my 383 and it seems my best options out there aren't too compatible with my stock 2.76 rear gears (was a 2 bbl). I'm trying to find a set of new 3.23 ring and pinion gears but I've had no luck in locating anything for the 8 3/4 489 casing. The closest I can find are 3.55. Also any recommendations for brands? Richmond, Titan?

What's wrong with using 3.55s? The difference isn't that great and can usually be made up by tire diameter.

3.55 is a fun gear set and like Archer said, that difference can be made up with tire size.

Richmond, Yukon, Motive are the only gears that I will install.

Stay away from USA Standard as they are noisy (says so in most of their discriptions), G2, Nitro, any of the cheap brands. There is a reason they are cheap.

 

Well according to a rpm calculator on the one website (I think Randy's) it shows that my rpm at 60 mph will be 2600. A 3.23 will lower that to about 2300.

Did the calculator include tire diameter?
2600 rpm won't hurt a properly built 440.

Maybe but my engine has had only the heads redone. The Short block is stock. The calculator does factor the tire diameter. My 2.76 gears for comparison give you about 2000 rpm

I routinely like to drive it at highway speeds and make it out to Moparfest both days ( a 2 hour plus round trip). I don't think I'd be too happy having to ***** foot it on the highway when I can't keep it below 70 mph right now. I think the 3.23 gear would be the best all around choice but all I can find right now are used. I find it hard to believe that nobody builds a new one. If it comes down to it I probably will just go with the 3.55 but I would take the 3.23 if I could find them.

This is what I was able to find when googling 8.75 489 3.23 gears. Type that into Google and click on the shopping tab and you'll see some on ebay too.

I run 355 gears in my Dart after I gave up looking for new 323 gears. At that time no one wanted them so no one made new ones.

 

SAVE your 2.76 gears. 3,55's are a fun gear. If you wan to go on along trip ? swap the 2.76 back in Only takes an hour. DO NOT USE A Reusable racing gasket

 

You will need a second case/center section then for this.

 

I looked into that too. I guy I work with who races his Dart, and knows a lot more when it comes to working on cars, told me that it's a quick changeover. The problem is I'm trying to keep costs down, and was hoping to just locate a 3.23 and be able to improve performance, be compatible with the new cam, and still be able to cruise comfortably on the highway.

Dropping another 800 or so bucks (over a set of gears) is out of the question. Hopefully I can locate some good quality used ones. Those new ones from the off roader website are pretty pricey. $400? Most of the ones I've looked at are around 200. Must be meant for racing and rock crawling.

 

They may be a little stronger than normal gears but that's about average (maybe on the high average) for a good set of gears. Normal driving though doesn't really need them.
