727 gone bad??
Let me introduce my car and st up to y'all. I got me a 1980 bowtie Camaro but it has a 440 big block with A-727-B transmission. The tranny is a short snout so I assume its from a truck. Well I was driving it and heard a huge popping sound towards the back and was wondering what was it that we heard. Now when I drive it will a little bit and then slip. It will go nowhere. Turn the car off for a min or 2 then will go a little bit. Any ideas what's going on it what happened? Checked the fluids and its full and not burned up.

Hard to say. Slippage and shift problems can be quite a few things, some cheap to fix. But loud noises and breakage are usually "serious."
the upside is that TF transmissions are one of the easiest to rebuild there is, period
You can download several shop manuals which have troubleshooting info:
http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=31
here
http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109
and you can download what is essentially the transmission section of the shop manual here:
http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=22
Consider buying the excellent book on the subject by Munroe
and on YouTube there is a series of about 20 videos on rebuilding one
Now, I don't know how in InternetExploder, but if you get Firefox, which will run in WhineHozed, you can get a plug in / add on called "download helper" as well as some other ones, "Flash video downloader" and either of these will allow you to download these videos and save them for later
If you dance around the www a bit, there are some guys that are VERY knowledgable, and you don't need many special tools. If you are "handy" you can build the compressor you need pretty easily.

In case of a rear axle or U joint failure, this can damage the "sprag." If this is not fixed, real problems can occur. Also Google up how to properly handle burnouts in hot, high HP torqueflites

I know. But damage to the sprag is COMMONLY caused also by breakage in the rear axle. Whenever a U joint, rear axle, or "any" breakage is experienced, the transmission should be checked for rear sprag damage.

as all ways the trans experts here are great. but thats not me. so could 440roadrunner tell me if this is right. i think i heard that at the track you have to be care full how you do the burn out. so the trouble you listed doesnt happen. i think i read that.???

The problem is several, and I'm no expert. Part of the problem is the weight of the rotating drum in the 727. The same thing can happen in a 904, except they "generally" can't explode like some of the 727s have. Just google "exploding torqueflite."
Also some of the GM trans suffer the same fate.

i had a new 1977 dodge 100 club cab, long bed, i think 149" wheelbase. 318 727. it had a short tail housing. and two piece drive shaft. i dont know if they had only 1 length short housing, but i think they had only 1. NO linkage to the trany? please dont tell me they have HOSE for fuel line!!! does this cat have a death wise?

Having the kickdown linkage is critical unless it's full manual.
I would definitely check the rear axle first. Have someone lay down and watch your diveshaft when you try and accelerate.

i think the short housing by itself 727 is the same whether "A" or "RB". so i think you can mix and match. of course the inside parts have to match tail housing length. cause i sold a small block 727 short to as guy for a "RB" 727 trans.

No not yet. Haven't had the time yet to pull it out. Been working on it to get the area prepped since I'll be doing it in the driveway. I'll keep y'all posted with pics and all. I'm thinking the sprang popped causing the drum sound

I just got off the phone with my father in law's brother who is a transmission mechanic and says that I bustef the low drum and the main culprit is caused by the the gears I have set up in the rear end. Says I should go with a 4.10 gear. I was thinking about going with a bigger bear than that for my setup

Go with the 4.30 Rear gear....
