Park lever spring replacement advice

As I pulled my 62' Valiant into my driveway last week I noticed some unusual resistance when I pushed the park lever on my push button torqueflite control into the park position.
When I left for work the next morning there was a slight "pop" when I pulled the lever upward and shifted into reverse to back out of my driveway.
A second later I felt something hit my left foot.
That something turned out to be the park lever spring which was obviously broken.
I bought a replacement on e-bay and now have it in my possession.
After somehow managing to wedge myself under the dash, I tried to get a look at things to help me determine a plan of action.
Shooting myself with a shrink-ray came to mind.
If anyone has grappled with this task, I would dearly appreciate some advice.
I would prefer not to waste time or cause damage due to improper procedure.
Any advice would help.
Thank you
