Old to new or old looking Part 4
Freshening the bezel was somewhat difficult because of the time it takes to mask, paint, decide, and redo all over again. Having two spare pieces made this a bit easier. They were both stripped to the plastic with oven cleaner, sanded and coated with Krylon Premium Original Chrome. This paint takes 48 hours to cure in a very warm place. The bezel was modified using a Dremel and sanding drums. The entire shift indicator tower was removed from the center of the bezel -I have a console shifter. I fabricated a new bezel window using 3mm Lexan. To do this I made a curved buck from 18 gauge sheet metal that matched the original curve, placed a piece of cooking parchment paper on it, then the Lexan, and put it in the oven at 375 degrees. After 10 minutes the Lexan drooped to the curve of the buck and then was shaped and drilled. The very outside edge of the bezel has 1/8 inch flexible chrome trim that is pressure sensitive to attach. I purchased it online and it comes in different profiles and shades of chrome. Perfect for use on the exterior or interior of cars and is seriously chrome looking. I will not damage the original speedometer head as it is hard to find and in beautiful shape. I've attached pictures of
an original, one modified and one finished prototype.
