Hi everyone so this is very eye opening to me as i did not know there were so many issues with these ampmeters. in my 68 newport about 3 years ago i had a charging issue so i bypassed it by just joinging the black and red wires from either side together( same as previously suggested) now last year i had an issue of my battery over charging so i replaced my voltage regulator. i was looking to upgrade the wiring from my alternator to voltage regulator etc this year. now i notice it much more involved than that. can I simply leave the existing wiring the way it is just bypass the firewall bulkhead connector and add an extra8-10 awg wire going from the batt terminal on the alternator to my voltage regulator and upgrade the wire from the other side of the regulator to my battery?..... hopefully this makes sense. although my bulkhead looks to be in perfect shape this is very much worrying me. looks like i have lots of work ahead.

It really "just depends" If your wiring and bulkhead connector is in good shape, and you have not overloaded the system with a big stereo, electric fans, halogen lights, etc, you might be just fine.

All of this stuff is getting pretty old, though, and is somewhat suseptable to corrosion at the very least.
