318 cam help
I have I 1974 dart with 318 auto trans. Iam going to put 4 barrel carb and nice intake soon but was wondering what the biggest cam lift I could go with the stock springs and internals and if any one had a recommendation on a cam Iam walking the fine line between performance and the nice sound

IMHO, call a reputable cam co. like comp cams and ask. AND TELL THEM THE TRUTH! Dont select the cam for what you want the car to be in the future. Select it for what you have now. We hotrodders alwaYS THINK MOR E IS BETTER. Bad thinking for cams. You will end up with a miserable piece of **** to drive, wont idle and will spend forever getting the carb right, if you ever do. I over cammed a chebby, but thought it was ok cause I had a stick. Wrong!!!!!! Terrible to drive around town, had to drill holes in the primary butterflys just to get it to idle, but felt like I had nitrous once I hit 3500 rpm. Gotta figure, how much time do you actually spend at 3500 rpm and above? Please, I know you want the radical lope sound and all that, but a drivable car is much more fun. Trust the camtech guy.

scotts right, dont run the biggest thing you can. I have done this ,exactly the same spot your at, my first ride. 73 cuda, was 340 ,then 318. I put a 650 holley dual feed on an ld340 intake, the new edee alum. performare w/out egr, is the next best, then a purple cam, 484 split lift,282 duration, then went w/ rhodes lifters, ran stock valve train, in esence, i over cammed it just a bit, but the rhodes lifters are variable degree so from off idle to 2500r`s, they werent pumped up all the way from 3000 up they were at full lift, so you had great torque and decent rev through the whole power band, did this on 9-1 comp. pistons, also stock, and 3.23 gears w/ 4 spd.and 87 octane gas, got 16 mpg and drove it every day only car I had then.

Thats TOO MUCH cam for stock valve springs! Anytime you run mismatched components, you are asking for trouble, spend the extra 60 bucks & get the matching springs for whatever cam you choose, & good luck! 318s, despite what a lot of people say, can run great numbers. (I'm running the MP .474 280 in my 318)
