Another Newb with his first Mopar.

Just picked up a 69 Valiant, and I really know nothing about Mopar. I'm coming here hoping someone would be kind enough to answer the many dumb questions I'll have.

First off is identifying this engine. I've been everywhere trying to find out what it is? It's a slant 6, but it's not original to the car. None of decoders really tell me what it is.

The head stamp behind the alternator reads, 2 225 T 6 25E. The only other numbers I can find is on the driver side of the block. It shows, 330 A, then a metal tab behind the header that reads 6 11 82. Those numbers match nothing I can find.

Next is, how are the stock trannies and rear ends in a 69 Valiant? Would they need an upgrade on both if I went turbo, and a 4 barrel on this 6? I have access to a 8.75" Mopar rear end, just don't if it's necessary yet.

I'm also going to assume I can use a ton of parts from other A bodies. Are there any quarter panels from other A bodies that will match my Valiant? I really need a right rear quarter, but there are no other Valiants around I can scavenge from. But, plenty of others.

Thanks in advance, guys. I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot of me in the near future.

Welcome to the site...
Looks to me like a 225-6 cylinder motor fro that number....
If you Boost it, You will find the fail limit pretty fast... Trans for sure right out of the box.... Differential might hold for a few test passes, but thats about it.
Quarters>>>> AMD Sheet metals or Classic Industries...

So, it's probably a little more efficient to just throw a double barrel on it, and 2.5" exhaust?

It looks I have a 8.75" rear end, so far. It has 12 bolts and looks like a banjo.

This will probably sound stupid, but is there any way to mod this single barrel intake to accept a 2 barrel? I've seen a few pictures that look like that's what was done.

Or, am I just peeing in the wind, and should build a 318?

Dont get Discouraged... Turboed 6's are A hell of a hoot when you get them to run... Easy low 10's and you can drive them to the store and back....

That is awesome! We have a guy around here with a 68 or 69 Valiant that's pushing like 600hp with turbo 6.

I wasn't really looking for that kind of power, myself. I want around 300-315hp. I was looking at more of an undersized turbo, to get my boost working down around 2500-3000rpm. This one will be a street car, but I'd still like to have little bit of juice for those little boys in their stock SI's.

From all the reading I've been doing, a cam, 2 barrel, and bigger exhaust should give me right at what I need. What do you think?

Still need to learn about Mopar transmissions, but my buddy says the one in mine is a 904, I think. I'm going to find the numbers on it tonight.

Back to cutting out a floor pan I go...

Sure... Stick with something thats sized for a Buick V-6 4.3 Grand National and you will be close.. Not to sure the 2 barrels have worked out? But the Offenhouser / assiue 4 barrel intake works well... A good header... A little better valve spring and some medium ignition. and you could be off and running....
As for the 904 stuff.... Cope transmissions or A&A Transmissions are good sources for parts.... Cope builds a great trans.....

Just my input.... Keep use posted...Will stay tuned....

Well, my buddy is an idiot...

There are only 7 bolts on that rear end, and I can't seem to find any numbers on the transmission. Been looking all morning.

Now I don't know what to do. Hopefully I'll have this floor pan welded and cleaned up today, and I'll see how I feel then. Maybe I can run out to the pull a part later and see what I can find.

I'll try to get some pictures today too.

Ok, it had 9 bolts. 5 on bottom 4 on top.

That would make it a 7.25".

So you need a rear end ,8 3/4 or a ford 8.8 with 9" ends. Do it ONE TIME and be done. Just my opinion.

That's the plan. I have 2 Mopar guys in driving range that I have talked to. One wants an arm and a leg for everything that needs fixed, and the other is on the downside selling leftovers from his projects.

All I really need is to finish these pans, get the interior panels and seats covered and in, and a master rebuild for the front end. It'll be road worthy, and I'll be driving it.

Upgrades are another story. Performance stuff is so hard to find. I'm used to finding everything I need in a junkyard and giving it a little TLC.
This Mopar stuff is another world. I've never had to buy new parts like before.

I guess I could show you guys what I'm working with. I'm so ready to get that Eddie Van Halen paint job off of it. It's such an eye sore at the moment.

Sorry for the weird picture links. It's the only way I can get them in here right now.

Ummm yeah, and can soomeone tell me what the heck this is? It's part of the ignition, and it's line in comes from some little white ceramic thing with 2 leads on it. Looks like a coil on the back of it. LOL!

Well, that didn't take long. The wife can't seem to understand how I can spend $3000 and every spare moment of time over the next year on a 50 year old car. Caused a big 'ol argument last night. She's rather spend $10k on a Smart Car today.

I can honestly say that I fell in love and lost her, all in one week. I've waited 20 years to get my hands on a toy like this, and it's breaking my heart to have to send her on her way. I even named her Dorothy, after my grandma...

And so ends my brief but passionate love affair with Mopar. It was amazing while it lasted.

If there not on board with the plans you have to determine which is more important. It's not hard to pick sometimes!

Well, she is sticking around for a little bit longer. I'm going to finish the floor pans, rebuild the front end, recover the interior, and get her ready for paint.

With whats there, I just don't feel it's a good platform for what I want. If it already had a rear end and tranny I'd build it on up. But, I'm thinking she may be great trade bait in the right condition. Hopefully I can trade up to something already setup for a little power. It's gonna have to be another Mopar, though. I just love these things!

What is the most efficient surface rust removal method, for frame and underside?

I've been using a a wire brush and lite sanding disks on my angle grinder, and smaller wire brushes for my drill in higher spots. In the place that I can't get a tool in I'm using sand paper the best I can, and trying to get as much rust stopper in there as best I can.

What should I coat the bare metal with, as I clean it? Rust stopper is expensive and goes quick. Is there a spray paint that works well?

Yeah, I'm finding myself a little confused on the difference in a 727 and 904. The 904 is lighter, but can't handle as much as the 727?

It's coming out of a '73 Roadrunner. It's supposed to be the stock tranny from that car.

I hit on a ton of side work over the last 2 weeks or so. I'm snatching any deal I can find right now. I may have a 9" rear from a mustang in the next few days, and hoping I can work a deal on a 318 from a, 70 Coronet.

If I can get an entire drive train for around $1000 right now, it won't hurt me too bad.
