I know this is not a good thing at all, it has a brand new engine in it but the fuel pump does look old would it just be a bad diaphram in the fuel pump that could cause this?

 

Could be the fuel pump or could be very rich or flooding at the carb.

 

Thanks man! im just going to go ahead and replace the fuel pump see if that eliminates the problem they are somewhat cheap and change the oil tomorrow and see if the problem persists. the oil felt ok on my fingers when i rubbed them together though

 

If there is gas in the oil you will see droplets on the dipstick. If this is a new engine, you should be changing oil a couple times initially anyways.

Could be a rich issue, but if its that rich you are washing the cylinder walls and will end up redoing the engine sooner than you think. You would also see a fair bit of black smoke if it is that rich.

I would lean towards the pump.

 

You didn't say what carb you are running but it is also possible the needle and seat are sticking and not stopping the flow of gas when the motor is stopped. If the needle is stuck a considerable amount of gas could get into the manifold and run down into the bores through the open valves.If you have to crank and pump the gas alot to get the car to start, the gas has run out of the carb while sitting.

 

If you dumped gas in the carb to prime it to start it for the 1st time that could be where your gas came from.

 

A ruptured diaphram will definately Fill your crankcase with gas. I have had it happen. The main indication I had was gas smell and overfilled oil level. I drained about 3gallons of oil gas mix and the engine did not last long after that was all repaired. So definetly replace the pump if you suspect it.

 

Sorry for not responding sooner i was at work. It has a brand new edelbrock 600 CFM 4 barrel. Its not putting blacksmoke out the new tail pipes i would most definately see it coming out and it does not smell overall rich with gas from the outside of the car. The oil level was right smack dab in the middle of the dipstick and the oil looks ok no spots on the dipstick from light weight gas. also i did not need to dump gas down the carb it fired right up second try, I bought a new pump and doing it tomorrow along with an oil change, i have to take the car to a shop because my tools are limited for what i can do i have no wrenches, only screwdrivers and monkey wrenches and pliers really, its sad very sad, i put tools on my bday list for my parents haha

 

Fuel pump was leaking a little and new one is on, changed the oil today. but still has a gas smell in the new oil like not bad bad like boom you can smell it right off the bat but you have to find the smell, which you can tell slightly, its better than what it was yesterday thats for sure. my other classic car smells about the same and its ten years older and has the original fuel pump on it and have had no problems with it.

 

My fuel pump took a crap and ruptured the diaphragm and dumped a bunch of gas in the crank case.

Definitely change the oil and filter. You'll wash out the engine with gas in there..

I'd say if you got the oil changed, you're probably set.

I'll post my pictures when i get back to my computer of all the damage it did..

 

Yikes sounds like i just caught it just in time for the fuel pump. How can i check if the brand new carb (edelbrock 600 CFM 4 barrel performer) is leaking fuel down into the cylinders? I have never had a problem starting it after it sits over night like the fuel has drained out the bowls into the engine. Starts right up first or second crank

 

I would just drive it normal and keep an eye on it. Hope you got it fixed.

 

everyone i know that has bought those afb copys have had trouble with them not saying thats the problem because with cars always more than one thing can cause the same problem

 

I would change the oil again after running it for a bit. I assume you also changed the filter. Remember that you don't get all the engine oil out. Probably 1/2 litre gets hung up in lifters, heads, anywhere it can sit.

But I would definitely change the oil out again. AND filter.

My 340 did the same thing after I rebuilt it years ago. The floats (both) in my holley were sticking. I could smell it, and see it on the dipstick. Dumped the oil/filter twice. Now whenever the car sits for long periods, (a month, or two) I always tap on the float bowls with a screwdriver handle, before cranking. It won't harm the engine if you caught it early.

 

One other fine note for everyone is either add an additive to your fuel or run your car once a week. With the 10-20% corn juice in the gas things will get gummed up and stick in your carbs.

it smells like gas and sometimes it sputters like its running out of gas but it only does it for a minute its not leaking gas anywhere.
