Small Block Recipe

I need a good small block recipe for my '68 Dart. I have a 318, 340, and 360. I'm looking for about 3-350 HP/TQ with a VERY streetable combination. Automatic and manual brakes, probably 3.23 or 3.55 sure grip will back the motor up. I'd kinda like to save the 340 for a really special ride, like a Demon, or a 'cuda Notch. along the same line, I have the 8.75 coming out of my Duster in favor of the Dana 60 I got a few weeks ago. I also have the 8.15 that came from the Sport. Again, I am wanting to save the 8.75 for that special project, but if convinced I need it, I'll put it in.

Here is what I have in mind.
  • 318 block
  • 318 Crank
  • 9:1 CR
  • Mild head prep
  • Edelbrock Performer Intake
  • Edelbrock Performer Cam
  • Carter 625 AFB
  • Headers, 2.25 exhaust W/H Pipe

What do y'all think? Descent street combo? Not looking for a boulevard bruiser, but a good street car. I will have my Duster for that

Why not do that to the 360 instead? You'll get closer to the numbers that you want. I would bump up the compression to 9.5:1 as well. What did you have in mind for "mild head work"?

Also, since you are going with an auto, I would skip the Performer cam and intake a get the Performer RPM cam and intake as that will start to create th epower you want as the automatic trans is getting the car moving. Also, install a shift kit in the trans with a stall convertor around 2000 RPM. I think that you will be much happier this way. You'll still have a nice ride and plenty of power for the street and still be able to take it to the track when you get that need.

I wouldn't touch the 340 or 8 3/4 for this though. A well built 8.25 should be fine. If you can get your hands onto a 9.25, that would be better.

I was thinking 318 just for the fact I can say I beat the competition with "just a a318" The 360 is also on the table as I don't want to be too limiting on my options. I think it would cost about as much either way..so...

318:
  • 9.5:1 CR
  • Performer RPM Intake, carb, and cam
  • Mild head work ( probably around $500 worth per head I thnk )
  • Same as above

I may end up using the 360, just don't know yet.

Anybody recommend a good converter, and trans kit?

And thanks for the WB =) It's good to be working on the cars again. Shame I had to go and brake my truck tho Still bummed about that. My GF want's me to give the truck to her daughter and make her fix it. She says she ( the daughter ) wants it...

I like what B&M puts out for shift kits and stall convertors but TCI is just as good if not better. I would think around 2200-2500 RPM stall rating would be good for the motor that you want to build.

The 318 and 360 cranks have the same stroke? If not, *hint*hint*

The 360 has larger journals IIRC. It would be like putting a 440 crank in a 400, but I see your point. Also, the 360 is externally balanced while the 318/340 are internally balanced. Anyway...I'm not wanting to go too radical with it, as I might end up selling it to help pay for getting the Duster finished
