98 3500 v10

98 3500 v10

Hey guys i dont know if im in the right place or not but anyway im lookin at buying a 1998 ram 3500 v10 4x4 dually. It has a trans cooler, trailor package, and no 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch. it has 112xxx miles on it. There asking 6000 for it. my question is, is there anything besides typical dodge trans issues?

thats always a good question
the v 10 is a 360 with 2 more cylinders its very durable but...
how was it taken care of is the question be prepared for the worst but expect the best you never know google the motor youll get a lot of info on them go for several diffent sights you will start to see a pattern if any on this motor trany combo you will learn alot and in the end you will still get one if not that one

i did google the motor ans trans combo and i found out that basically the trans is a beefed up electronic 727. i dont know exactly how it was taken care of because its at a dealer but like i said its got a trans cooler and no signs of any continuous heavy hauling ill be test driving it tomorrow

take your time there are plenty of fish in the sea
remember also other wear areas on the truck axels front end parts
look for odd wear patterns on the tires when you drive it it should not pull left or right if it does.......... red flag if it clunks into gear red flag if it vibrates at high way speeds red flag if the rear end makes noise red flag

oh ya i know i know bout the normal things to look for clunks bangs creeks ya know all that good stuff i just didnt know if there was something specific i should be aware of

If there is no 5th wheel or goose neck ball in the bed, look for mounting holes for one.

With a truck of that age and mileage, I don't expect the dealer to dump much money into it for typical service/maintance parts. Track bar is always something to look at, ball joints, wheel bearing units too as they seem to be under sized for these trucks. Otherwise just look at the fluids and how it shifts.

i figured as much there was no holes in the bed at all for a 5th wheel or gooseneck but it does have air bag helper springs in the back. i was supposed to drive it earlier but my mom got hit in her escape so i went to the hospital instead (all is well no broken bones or fractures just a burn on her neck from the seatbelt) she got t-boned right at the pilar between the front and rear drivers side doors

With 112K miles the front end is shot and the trans will need a rebuild soon.. !!!!
A vehicle like that I would offer maybe $4500
$5 a gallon fuel will make it expensive to drive a 10 mpg vehicle and those $150-200 fill ups..

Paid 4.49 yesterday at the cheap station.. Your still talking $100 for a fill up.. It probably has a 35 gal tank I was in Ohio last year Every time I crossed a state line the gas prices went up 10 cents

ya thats true, that truck would actually be an upgrade to the milage im getting with my diplomat(6 to 7mpg) i drive 2 miles a day to work so its not all that bad of a drive. i also work on cars on the side and i do alot of house calls for people who only have one vehicle or situations like that and that would basically be my garage

Something is wrong with your Dip should do better than 7mpg
I had a 68 Cry TC wagon with 440 and I always got 10-11 or better, 14 on a trip one time
It did get 5-7 before I threw the OEM Holly in the trash

frist fo all hope your mom heals well and fast with no wiplash i know i was sideswiped 10+ yres ago and wiplash sucks to this day i have pains and problems

yes i agree your dip has a problem that fuel economy is wrong for that motor there is a tuning problem is it still the lean burn system
my 318 needs 93 at 3.99-3.85 depending where i get about 12 - 15 i dont keep my foot out of it i always take her to 3000 when driving and thats just the beginning
the truck with that many miles on it is ready for timing chain gear set trany rebuild and its 4x4x well wat about the transfer-case front and rear axles steering components and the such you have allot of options with that motor if you do a timing chain and gears i would do a cam also
theres a local used truck dealer hear in central florida in the city of sanford
"Gibson Truck world" he has an infomercial and man you would be surprised an the problems with modern trucks even the heavy duties are light construction
i dont know if you can find him on the internet but wow
he buys a truck and they take it in there shop and rebuild it or resell it at the auction
but if you got skills you can rebuild almost all of it

ok so i drove that ram and found out it needed a leaf spring shackle, tailgate didnt open, the parking brake light wouldnt go off and the speedo wouldnt work untill after you hit 26 mph so yea haha

The brake light and speedo are the same issue. It's just the rear ABS sensor.

a little late to the party but i have the 69 with the 5.9 and i have around 170 on it... my only issues where a coil. i plow, pull car trailers and mess around off road every so often. The front end is hit or miss, if you replace parts as you need them it can be a minor thing, but if you neglect it, it will become expensive. i run around with a blizzard plow which is around 1000 pounds not including everything else and the truck has warn it since we got it in 2002... and i did one tie rod end, one drag link, one trac bar and its starting to now get alittle ball joint movement and thats over 10 years of ownership, and we are not light on the truck. we have a twin truck thats a cummins which pretty much has gone part for part in repairs... its all in the up keep. The trans has been bullet proof so far other than that the reverse band is alittle loose from plowing and that will be addressed next time i have it in the air at work.. i love my ram personally but would defiantly talk him down in price or have him repair all the issues.
