Hey guys, I am new here, and new to Dodge Trucks also. I have always liked the old Power Wagons, and have been looking for one to drive. I have been leaning towards a '78 Dodge W200 Power Wagon Crew Cab, which was originally a military truck. They all seem to be 4x4, with a 318 engine and auto tranny. I just don't know much about these trucks, motors, and tranny's. Can someone give me some insight about these trucks and what to look for in them before I decide to pull the trigger? Also, not sure about axle ratio's and four wheel drive operation on these Dodges either. Thanks guys in advance. Looking forward to being a Dodge Truck owner!

 

I've had 2 of these. They are called an M880. Maybe different with the crew-cab [sounds Air-Force to me]. 318, mono-barrel carb, 727 trans, locking hubs, manual brakes, manual steering! Usually a 1-ton spring package. But a miserable POS to drive! They make a good snow plow, or field truck to park at your cabin. The electrical system is **** [they all melt the fuse-box!], the steering is ****! [ 45-90 deg play], impossible to turn at low-speeds [unless you want to be buff! It put 2 inches on my arms!]

 

You can't beat the reliablity of the 318 motors. The 727 trannies are a solid transmission. T-cases are either a np208 (chain) or np205 (gears). Being a W200, it'll be a 3/4 ton so D44 front and D60 rear. Probably 4.10 or 3.73 gears.

Look closely at the under side of the cab and where the floor meets the sides of the cab. They seem t rust/rot there (it also depends on where you live).

Like Scotty said, the wiring can melt if not properly cared for but there are kits out there to fix that issue. As for the steering, that can be made better as well.

I'm assuming since it is a crew cab and a 3/4T it'll have a long bed so turning that beast would be like turning an oil tanker.

Over all though, They are not a bad truck. I'd pull the trigger on one that is in good condition.
