Possible ignition problem
Help, need some advice. I have a 74 Gold duster with a 318. right now it will run for about 40 min. on ideling in my drive way or drive for about 2 miles then will just die. When it dies it acts like she wants to keep running but just can't. Then when it is dead will not start until it has cooled for a little bit. Any suggestions, my ignition coil is fairly new, timing is set to 8 degrees BTDC.
Thank you.
Thank you.

First thought is vapor lock or some kind of fuel problem. When the car dies, is there a strong fuel smell (which might mean electrical) or none (meaning fuel)?

Very first thing to do is immediately after it stops, check for spark. An igniiton coil or other component going bad can give these exact symptoms.
If you have spark when it dies, you pretty much know it's a fuel problem. Remove the air filter, pump the throttle, and look down the throat for the accelerator pump shot.

74 i had a similar problem where it would run and just cut out on me and would act like it wanted to start but never would, i had no spark at all when this happened. The biggest part of why it was happening to me was my amp gauge in my instrument cluster would over heat and just stop working and would cut out until it had a chance to cool down. so i just wired around it for now until i replace the cluster.
Hope this helps

OK. I have changed out the ignition coil with the previous coil, let it run at idle in my driveway. After about 40 min. it would sputter but would catch itself smooth back out to a nice idle, then 3-5 min. later sputter again.. smooth back out but it never died. this sequence repeated 3 times before I shut her down. any ideas?
Thank you for all your help.
